僕人和差役因為天冷，就生了炭火，站在那裏烤火；彼得也同他們站着烤火。

那時，祭司長和民間的長老聚集在大祭司稱為該亞法的院裏。

西門‧彼得正站着烤火，有人對他說：「你不也是他的門徒嗎？」彼得不承認，說：「我不是。」

西門‧彼得跟着耶穌，還有一個門徒跟着。那門徒是大祭司所認識的，他就同耶穌進了大祭司的院子。彼得卻站在門外。大祭司所認識的那個門徒出來，和看門的使女說了一聲，就領彼得進去。

耶穌極其傷痛，禱告更加懇切，汗珠如大血點滴在地上。

彼得說：「眾人雖然跌倒，我總不能。」耶穌對他說：「我實在告訴你，就在今天夜裏，雞叫兩遍以先，你要三次不認我。」彼得卻極力地說：「我就是必須和你同死，也總不能不認你。」眾門徒都是這樣說。

見彼得烤火，就看着他，說：「你素來也是同拿撒勒人耶穌一夥的。」彼得卻不承認，說：「我不知道，也不明白你說的是甚麼。」於是出來，到了前院，雞就叫了。

以利亞聽見，就用外衣蒙上臉，出來站在洞口。有聲音向他說：「以利亞啊，你在這裏做甚麼？」

他在那裏進了一個洞，就住在洞中。耶和華的話臨到他說：「以利亞啊，你在這裏做甚麼？」

彼得遠遠地跟着耶穌，直到大祭司的院子，進到裏面，就和差役同坐，要看這事到底怎樣。

總要警醒禱告，免得入了迷惑。你們心靈固然願意，肉體卻軟弱了。」

他們在院子裏生了火，一同坐着；彼得也坐在他們中間。有一個使女看見彼得坐在火光裏，就定睛看他，說：「這個人素來也是同那人一夥的。」

有些希伯來人過了約旦河，逃到迦得和基列地。掃羅還是在吉甲，百姓都戰戰兢兢地跟隨他。
