耶穌回到三個門徒那裡，見他們都睡著了，就對彼得說：「難道你們不能跟我一同警醒一時嗎？

二人在榮光中顯現，談論有關耶穌離世的事情，就是祂在耶路撒冷將要成就的事。彼得和兩個同伴都睏得睡著了，他們醒來後，看見了耶穌的榮光以及站在祂身邊的兩個人。

你們要思想忍受罪人如此頂撞的主，免得疲倦灰心。

押沙龍問戶篩說：「這就是你對朋友的忠誠嗎？你為什麼不跟你的朋友去呢？」

彼得說：「即使所有人都背棄你，我也決不會背棄你！」耶穌說：「我實在告訴你，就在今天晚上雞叫兩次以前，你會三次不認我。」彼得鄭重地說：「就算要我跟你一起死，我也不會不認你。」其他門徒也都這樣說。

祂回來時見他們又睡著了，因為他們睏得眼皮發沉，也不知道對祂說什麼。祂第三次禱告回來後，對他們說：「你們還在睡覺休息嗎？夠了，時候到了，看啊，人子要被出賣、交在罪人的手裡了。

祂禱告完後，便起身回到門徒那裡，看見他們因憂愁而疲憊地睡著了，就說：「你們為什麼睡覺呢？要起來禱告，以免陷入誘惑！」

新郎遲遲未到，她們等得困倦，便打盹睡著了。

耶和華說：「如果你與步行的人競走，尚且感到疲乏，又怎能與馬賽跑呢？如果你在寬闊之地尚且跌倒，在約旦河邊的叢林中又會怎樣呢？

所以不要像其他人一樣沉睡，要警醒戒備，因為睡覺的人是在夜裡睡，醉酒的人是在夜裡醉。我們既屬於白晝，就應當保持清醒，要把信心和愛心當作護心鏡遮胸，把得救的盼望當作頭盔戴上。

船長來到約拿身邊對他說：「你這個人，怎麼這時候還在睡覺！快起來祈求你的神吧，也許你的神會憐憫我們，饒我們一命。」
