我朝見永恆主，在高高的上帝面前屈身，該帶着甚麼？難道我朝見他、要帶着燔祭，帶着一歲的牛犢麼？難道永恆主還喜悅千千的公羊，或萬萬的油河麼？難道我可為我的過犯獻我的長子？為我的罪獻我身所生的果子麼？世人哪，永恆主已指示了你甚麼是善：永恆主向你要的是甚麼：無非是要你行公義，愛堅貞，謙卑謹慎跟你的上帝同行啊。

因為我喜悅堅貞，不喜悅祭祀；我喜悅人認識上帝，勝於人獻全燔祭。

撒母耳說：『永恆主喜愛燔祭和平安祭，哪如喜愛人之聽從永恆主的聲音呢？看哪，聽從勝於獻祭，留心聽、勝於公綿羊的脂肪。

你們若明白了「我喜愛憐憫，不喜愛祭祀」是甚麼意思，就不至於定無罪的為有罪了。

你們去研究研究「我喜愛憐憫，不喜愛祭祀」是甚麼意思。我來不是要召義人，乃是要召罪人。』

即使我不因你的祭物來責備你——你的燔祭倒不斷在我面前——我也不從你家中取公牛，不從你圈中取公山羊。因為森林中的百獸是我的，千山上的牲畜是我的。空中的飛鳥我都認識；野地的動物都屬於我。就使我餓了，我也不用告訴你；因為世界和其中所充滿的、都是我的。難道我還喫雄壯公牛的肉麼？還喝公山羊的血麼？你要以感謝為祭獻與上帝；要向至高者還你所許的願；在患難的日子你要呼求我，我便救拔你；你就榮耀我。』

假使我用人之捲舌頭說話、甚至於用天使的語言來說話，卻沒有愛，我就成了鳴的鑼響的鈸一般。假使我有神言傳講的才能，又明白一切奧祕、一切知識；假使我有全備的信、能夠移山，卻沒有愛，我就算不了甚麼。假使我將一切資財分給人喫；假使我捨棄身體去給人燒，卻沒有愛，我就無濟於事。

永恆主說：『你們所獻的許多祭物、對我有甚麼益處？公綿羊的燔祭和肥畜的脂油、我飽飫了；公牛的血、羊羔和公山羊的血、我都不喜悅。你們來朝見我，誰向你們要這踐踏我院子的舉動呢？不要再帶虛浮的供物來了；獻祭的燻氣是我所厭惡；月初一和安息日、聚會之召集——禁食和聖節會、我容忍不住。你們的月初一和制定節期、我心裏恨惡：這些已成了累着我的重擔；我都揹得膩了。你們伸開雙手來禱告，我必掩目不看你們；就使你們多多禱告，我也不聽；你們的手都滿了血，你們的指頭滿了罪孽。你們要洗澡、使自己純潔；從我眼前除掉你們行為之敗壞；要止住作惡，要學習行善；尋求公平，糾正殘暴的人，為孤兒伸冤，為寡婦辯訴。』

凡以感謝為祭而獻的便是榮耀我；（正路就在那裏）我必使他得見上帝的拯救。』

我所選擇、使人刻苦自己的日子難道是這樣的禁食麼？難道只是叫人垂頭像燈心草，拿麻布和爐灰當床鋪麼？難道你要把這樣叫做禁食，作為使永恆主悅納的日子麼？我所選擇的真禁食豈不是以下這些行為：『豈不是打開兇惡的銬鐐，解下軛上的繩索，使被壓制的得自由，折斷一切的軛麼？豈不是把你的食物分給饑餓的人，將流浪的貧困人帶到你家中，見赤身裸體的、給他衣服遮身，而不躲藏避開你骨肉之親麼？

行仁義公平、比獻祭更蒙永恆主悅納。

『我恨惡、我鄙視你們的節期，我不聞你們聖節會中的氣味。你們雖向我獻上燔祭，我也不喜歡；你們的素祭、我不悅納；你們肥畜的平安祭、我不看。讓你們詩歌之嘈嗷遠離我吧！你們琵琶的調子、我不聽。但願公平如洪水滾滾，公義如江河長流。

萬軍之永恆主以色列之上帝這麼說：『你們儘管將你們的燻祭加在你們的平安祭上、喫肉吧。因為我將你們列祖從埃及地領出來那一天，關於燻祭和平安祭的事我並沒有提說，也沒有吩咐他們呀；我只吩咐他們以下這一件，說：「你們要聽我的聲音，我就做你們的上帝，你們就做我的子民；你們要行我所吩咐你們的一切道路，好得平安順遂。」

以上既說：『祭物和供物、全燔祭和為罪獻的祭、你未嘗願要過，也未嘗喜悅過（而這種祭物卻是按照律法而供獻的）；
