但是法利賽人聽見耶穌籠住了撒都該人的口，就聚集在一處；其中有一個人詰問耶穌，試探他說：『先生，律法上哪一條誡命最大呀？』耶穌對他說：『要用你完全的心、完全的性命、完全的精神、愛主你的上帝。這是最大的，又是第一要緊的誡命。其次的也跟這個相彷彿：要愛你的鄰舍如同你自己。這兩條誡命、就是全律法和神言人的教訓所依據的。』

有一個律法師起來，故意試探耶穌說：『先生，我該作甚麼，才可以承受永生啊？』耶穌對他說：『律法上寫的是甚麼？你誦讀的怎麼樣呢？』他回答說：『要將你完全的心、你完全的性命、完全的力量、完全的精神、愛主你的上帝；也要愛你的鄰舍、如同你自己。』耶穌對他說：『你回答的正對；你這樣行，就必得永生。』

有幾個經學士應時就說：『先生，你說得好。』

所以凡廢掉誡命中這些最小的一條，又這樣教訓人的，在天國裏他必稱為最小的；凡遵行誡命，又教訓人的，這人在天國裏必稱為大。

他問耶穌說：『甚麼誡命啊？』耶穌說：就是：『不可殺人；不可姦淫；不可偷竊；不可作假見證；

『經學士和法利賽人、假冒為善的人哪，你們有禍啊！因為你們將薄荷、茴香、芹菜、獻上十分之一，而律法上較有重量的事，如正義憐憫和信實、你們卻遺棄了。其實呢，前者那些雖不可遺棄，後者這些卻必須行。

『但是你們法利賽人有禍啊！因為你們將薄荷芸香和各樣蔬菜獻上了十分之一，卻把正義和愛上帝的心疏忽過去。其實呢、前者那些雖不可放鬆，後者這些卻必須行。
