And He built a tower in the middle of it, And also carved out a wine vat in it; Then He expected it to produce good grapes, But it produced only worthless ones.“ And now, you inhabitants of Jerusalem and people of Judah, Judge between Me and My vineyard.What more was there to do for My vineyard that I have not done in it? Why, when I expected it to produce good grapes did it produce worthless ones?

It is like a man away on a journey, who upon leaving his house and putting his slaves in charge, assigning to each one his task, also commanded the doorkeeper to stay alert.

And He was teaching them many things in parables, and was saying to them in His teaching,

Solomon had a vineyard at Baal hamon; He entrusted the vineyard to caretakers. Each one was to bring a thousand shekels of silver for its fruit.My very own vineyard is at my disposal; The thousand shekels are for you, Solomon, And two hundred are for those who take care of its fruit.”

And with many such parables He was speaking the word to them, so far as they were able to understand it;and He did not speak to them without a parable; but He was explaining everything privately to His own disciples.

You removed a vine from Egypt; You drove out the nations and planted it.You cleared the ground before it, And it took deep root and filled the land.The mountains were covered with its shadow, And the cedars of God with its branches.It was sending out its branches to the sea And its shoots to the Euphrates River.Why have You broken down its hedges, So that all who pass that way pick its fruit?A boar from the forest eats it away, And whatever moves in the field feeds on it.God of armies, do turn back; Look down from heaven and see, and take care of this vine,The shoot which Your right hand has planted, And of the son whom You have strengthened for Yourself.It is burned with fire, it is cut down; They perish from the rebuke of Your face.

who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons and daughters, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the Law, the temple service, and the promises;whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

Then what advantage does the Jew have? Or what is the benefit of circumcision?Great in every respect. First, that they were entrusted with the actual words of God.

This is the one who was in the assembly in the wilderness together with the angel who spoke to him at length on Mount Sinai, and who was with our fathers; and he received living words to pass on to you.

But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them of the rich root of the olive tree,do not be arrogant toward the branches; but if you are arrogant, remember that it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you.You will say then,“ Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.”Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith. Do not be conceited, but fear;for if God did not spare the natural branches, He will not spare you, either.See then the kindness and severity of God: to those who fell, severity, but to you, God’s kindness, if you continue in His kindness; for otherwise you too will be cut off.And they also, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in; for God is able to graft them in again.For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree?

David found favor in God’s sight, and asked that he might find a dwelling place for the house of Jacob.But it was Solomon who built a house for Him.

All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and He did not speak anything to them without a parable.This was so that what was spoken through the prophet would be fulfilled:“ I will open My mouth in parables; I will proclaim things hidden since the foundation of the world.”

And He began to speak to them in parables:“ A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it, and dug a vat under the wine press and built a tower, and leased it to vine growers and went on a journey.And at the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine growers, in order to receive his share of the produce of the vineyard from the vine growers.And they took him, and beat him, and sent him away empty handed.And again he sent them another slave, and they wounded him in the head, and treated him shamefully.And he sent another, and that one they killed; and so with many others, beating some and killing others.He had one more man to send, a beloved son; he sent him to them last of all, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’But those vine growers said to one another,‘ This is the heir; come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours!’And they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and put the vine growers to death, and give the vineyard to others.Have you not even read this Scripture:‘ A stone which the builders rejected, This has become the chief cornerstone;This came about from the Lord, And it is marvelous in our eyes’?”And they were seeking to seize Him, and yet they feared the people, for they understood that He told the parable against them. And so they left Him and went away.

And He began telling this parable:“ A man had a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and did not find any.And he said to the vineyard keeper,‘ Look! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree without finding any. Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground?’But he answered and said to him,‘ Sir, leave it alone for this year too, until I dig around it and put in fertilizer;and if it bears fruit next year, fine; but if not, cut it down.’ ”

I gave them My statutes and informed them of My ordinances, which, if a person follows them, then he will live by them.Also I gave them My Sabbaths to be a sign between Me and them, so that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them.

“ Instead, I said to their children in the wilderness,‘ Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers or keep their ordinances or defile yourselves with their idols.I am the Lord your God; walk in My statutes and keep My ordinances and follow them.Sanctify My Sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between Me and you, so that you may know that I am the Lord your God.’

And not many days later, the younger son gathered everything together and went on a journey to a distant country, and there he squandered his estate in wild living.

And it will come about on that day, that every place where there used to be a thousand vines, valued at a thousand shekels of silver, will become briars and thorns.

He declares His words to Jacob, His statutes and His judgments to Israel.He has not dealt this way with any other nation; And as for His judgments, they have not known them. Praise the Lord!

But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which He loved.And He built His sanctuary like the heights, Like the earth which He has established forever.

But He began to tell the people this parable:“ A man planted a vineyard and leased it to vine growers, and went on a journey for a long time.At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine growers, so that they would give him his share of the produce of the vineyard; but the vine growers beat him and sent him away empty handed.And he proceeded to send another slave; but they beat him also and treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty handed.And he proceeded to send a third; but this one too they wounded and threw out.Now the owner of the vineyard said,‘ What am I to do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.’But when the vine growers saw him, they discussed with one another, saying,‘ This is the heir; let’s kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.’And so they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What, then, will the owner of the vineyard do to them?He will come and put these vine growers to death, and will give the vineyard to others.” However, when they heard this, they said,“ May it never happen!”But Jesus looked at them and said,“ Then what is this statement that has been written:‘ A stone which the builders rejected, This has become the chief cornerstone’?Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will crush him.”The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on Him that very hour, and yet they feared the people; for they were aware that He had spoken this parable against them.

And the disciples came up and said to Him,“ Why do You speak to them in parables?”And Jesus answered them,“ To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted.For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him.Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.And in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says,‘ You shall keep on listening, but shall not understand; And you shall keep on looking, but shall not perceive;For the heart of this people has become dull, With their ears they scarcely hear, And they have closed their eyes, Otherwise they might see with their eyes, Hear with their ears, Understand with their heart, and return, And I would heal them.’

“ I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit.You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.Remain in Me, and I in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself but must remain in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me.I am the vine, you are the branches; the one who remains in Me, and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.If anyone does not remain in Me, he is thrown away like a branch and dries up; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.If you remain in Me, and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.

Then You came down on Mount Sinai, And spoke with them from heaven; You gave them just ordinances and true laws, Good statutes and commandments.So You made known to them Your holy Sabbath, And gave them commandments, statutes, and law, Through Your servant Moses.

Yet I planted you as a choice vine, A completely faithful seed. How then have you turned yourself before Me Into the degenerate shoots of a foreign vine?

“ But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said,‘ Son, go work today in the vineyard.’But he replied,‘ I do not want to.’ Yet afterward he regretted it and went.And the man came to his second son and said the same thing; and he replied,‘ I will, sir’; and yet he did not go.Which of the two did the will of his father?” They* said,“ The first.” Jesus* said to them,“ Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the kingdom of God before you.For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him; but the tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him; and you, seeing this, did not even have second thoughts afterward so as to believe him.“ Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and he leased it to vine growers and went on a journey.And when the harvest time approached, he sent his slaves to the vine growers to receive his fruit.And the vine growers took his slaves and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.Again, he sent other slaves, more than the first; and they did the same things to them.But afterward he sent his son to them, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’But when the vine growers saw the son, they said among themselves,‘ This is the heir; come, let’s kill him and take possession of his inheritance!’And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vine growers?”They* said to Him,“ He will bring those wretches to a wretched end and lease the vineyard to other vine growers, who will pay him the fruit in the proper seasons.”Jesus* said to them,“ Did you never read in the Scriptures,‘ A stone which the builders rejected, This has become the chief cornerstone; This came about from the Lord, And it is marvelous in our eyes’?Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruit.And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and on whomever it falls, it will crush him.”When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard His parables, they understood that He was speaking about them.And although they sought to arrest Him, they feared the crowds, since they considered Him to be a prophet.Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying,“ The kingdom of heaven is like a king who held a wedding feast for his son.And he sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding feast, and they were unwilling to come.Again he sent other slaves, saying,‘ Tell those who have been invited,“ Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fattened cattle are all butchered and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast!” ’But they paid no attention and went their separate ways, one to his own farm, another to his business,and the rest seized his slaves and treated them abusively, and then killed them.Now the king was angry, and he sent his armies and destroyed those murderers and set their city on fire.Then he* said to his slaves,‘ The wedding feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.So go to the main roads, and invite whomever you find there to the wedding feast.’Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good; and the wedding hall was filled with dinner guests.“ But when the king came in to look over the dinner guests, he saw a man there who was not dressed in wedding clothes,and he* said to him,‘ Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ And the man was speechless.Then the king said to the servants,‘ Tie his hands and feet, and throw him into the outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth in that place.’For many are called, but few are chosen.”

Then I said,“ Oh, Lord God! They are saying of me,‘ Is he not just speaking in riddles?’ ”

And He was saying to them,“ To you has been given the mystery of the kingdom of God, but for those who are outside, everything comes in parables,so that while seeing they may see, and not perceive, and while hearing, they may hear, and not understand, otherwise they might return and it would be forgiven them.”And He* said to them,“ Do you not understand this parable? How will you understand all the parables?

So He said,“ A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then to return.

And He said,“ To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest they are told in parables, so that while seeing they may not see, and while hearing they may not understand.

They said to Him,“ Where do You want us to prepare it?”
