And they discussed it with one another, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will say,‘ Why then did you not believe him?’

They talked it over among themselves.“ If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why we didn’t believe John.

And they began considering the implications among themselves, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ He will say,‘ Then why did you not believe him?’

And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him?

They began to argue among themselves:“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ He will say,‘ Then why didn’t you believe him?’

第二天，約翰見耶穌迎面而來，就說：“看哪，神的羊羔，是除去世人的罪孽的！

約翰為他作見證，大聲說：“這一位就是我所說的：‘那在我以後來的，位分比我高，因為他本來是在我以前的。’”

約翰看見耶穌走過的時候，就說：“看哪，神的羊羔！”

娶新娘的是新郎。新郎的好友站在那裡聽著，聽見新郎的聲音就非常喜樂。因此，我這喜樂滿溢了！他必興旺，我必衰微。“那從天上來的，是在萬有之上；從地上來的，是屬於地，所講的也是屬於地。那從天上來的，是超越萬有之上。他把所見所聞的見證出來，可是沒有人接受他的見證。那接受他的見證的，就確認神是真的。神所差來的那一位講神的話，因為神把聖靈無限地賜給他。父愛子，已經把萬有交在他手裡。信子的，有永生；不信從子的，必不得見永生，神的震怒卻常在他身上。”

他們走了之後，耶穌對群眾講起約翰來，說：“你們到曠野去，是要看甚麼？被風吹動的蘆葦嗎？你們出去到底要看甚麼？身穿華麗衣裳的人嗎？那些穿著華麗衣裳的人，是在王宮裡的。那麼，你們出去要看甚麼？先知嗎？我告訴你們，是的。他比先知重要得多了。經上所記：‘看哪，我差遣我的使者在你面前，他必在你前頭預備你的道路。’這句話是指著他說的。我實在告訴你們，婦人所生的，沒有一個比施洗的約翰更大；然而天國裡最小的比他還大。從施洗的約翰的時候直到現在，天國不斷遭受猛烈的攻擊，強暴的人企圖把它奪去。所有的先知和律法，直到約翰為止，都說了預言。如果你們肯接受，約翰就是那要來的以利亞。

約翰的洗禮是從哪裡來的呢？是從天上來的，還是從人來的呢？”他們就彼此議論：“如果我們說‘是從天上來的’，他會問我們‘那你們為甚麼不信他呢？’如果我們說‘是從人來的’，我們又怕群眾，因為他們都認為約翰是先知。”於是回答耶穌：“我們不知道。”耶穌也對他們說：“我也不告訴你們，我憑甚麼權柄作這些事。

這兩個兒子，哪一個聽父親的話呢？”他們說：“大兒子。”耶穌對他們說：“我實在告訴你們：稅吏和娼妓比你們先進神的國。約翰來到你們那裡，指示你們行義路﹙或譯：“約翰在義路中，來到你們這裡”。﹚，你們不信他；稅吏和娼妓卻信了他。你們看見了之後，還是沒有改變心意去信他。

我看見了，就作見證說：‘這就是神的兒子。’”
