有一天，耶穌正在聖殿裡教導人、傳講福音，祭司長、律法教師和長老上前，質問祂：「告訴我們，你憑什麼權柄做這些事？誰授權給你了？」耶穌回答說：「我也問你們一個問題。你們告訴我，約翰的洗禮是從天上來的還是從人來的？」他們彼此議論說：「如果我們說『是從天上來的』，祂一定會問，『那你們為什麼不相信他？』如果我們說『是從人來的』，百姓會拿石頭打死我們，因為他們相信約翰是先知。」於是，他們回答說：「我們不知道約翰的洗禮是從哪裡來的。」耶穌說：「我也不告訴你們我憑什麼權柄做這些事。」

「果然如此，希律和本丟·彼拉多、外族人和以色列聚集在這城裡，要對抗你膏立的聖子耶穌，然而他們所做的只不過是你憑自己的能力和旨意所預定的。

第二天，官長、長老和律法教師都聚集在耶路撒冷，大祭司亞那，以及該亞法、約翰、亞歷山大和大祭司的許多親族都在場。他們令使徒站在當中，質問道：「你們憑什麼權柄、以誰的名義這樣做？」那時彼得被聖靈充滿，對他們說：「各位百姓的官長和長老啊，

再過兩天就是逾越節和除酵節，祭司長和律法教師正暗暗地找機會拘捕、殺害耶穌。

耶穌說：「我是公開對世人講的，我常在猶太人聚集的會堂和聖殿教導人，沒有在背地裡講過什麼。

列國為何咆哮？萬民為何枉費心機？世上的君王一同行動，官長聚集商議，要抵擋耶和華和祂所膏立的王。他們說：「讓我們掙斷他們的鎖鏈，脫去他們的捆索！」坐在天上寶座上的主必笑他們，祂必嘲笑他們。那時，祂必怒斥他們，使他們充滿恐懼。

當耶穌走過聖殿的所羅門廊時，

萬軍之耶和華說：「我要差遣我的使者為我開路。你們所尋求的主必突然來到祂的殿中。你們所期盼的那位立約的使者快要來了！」
