When Jesus entered the synagogue leader’s house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes,

When Jesus came to the leader’s house, He saw the flute players and a crowd lamenting loudly.

And when Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise,

Jeremiah composed laments for Josiah which all the male and female singers use to mourn Josiah to this very day. It has become customary in Israel to sing these; they are recorded in the Book of Laments.

While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue ruler’s house saying,“ Your daughter has died. Why trouble the teacher any longer?”But Jesus, paying no attention to what was said, told the synagogue ruler,“ Do not be afraid; just believe.”He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.They came to the house of the synagogue ruler where he saw noisy confusion and people weeping and wailing loudly.When he entered he said to them,“ Why are you distressed and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep.”And they began making fun of him. But he put them all outside and he took the child’s father and mother and his own companions and went into the room where the child was.

While he was still speaking, someone from the synagogue ruler’s house came and said,“ Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the teacher any longer.”But when Jesus heard this, he told him,“ Do not be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”Now when he came to the house, Jesus did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John, and James, and the child’s father and mother.

As he was saying these things, a ruler came, bowed low before him, and said,“ My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her and she will live.”Jesus and his disciples got up and followed him.

They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to one another,‘ We played the flute for you, yet you did not dance; we wailed in mourning, yet you did not weep.’

So Peter got up and went with them, and when he arrived they brought him to the upper room. All the widows stood beside him, crying and showing him the tunics and other clothing Dorcas used to make while she was with them.

The LORD who rules over all told me to say to this people,“ Take note of what I say. Call for the women who mourn for the dead! Summon those who are the most skilled at it!”I said,“ Indeed, let them come quickly and sing a song of mourning for us. Let them wail loudly until tears stream from our own eyes and our eyelids overflow with water.For the sound of wailing is soon to be heard in Zion. They will wail,‘ We are utterly ruined! We are completely disgraced! For our houses have been torn down and we must leave our land.’”I said,“ So now, you wailing women, hear what the LORD says. Open your ears to the words from his mouth. Teach your daughters this mournful song, and each of you teach your neighbor this lament.
