時有如望之徒晉謁曰：『吾儕及法利塞人恆齋、爾徒獨不齋何也？』

Then John’s disciples came and asked him,“ How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

One day John’s disciples came. They said to Jesus,“ We and the Pharisees often go without eating. Why don’t your disciples go without eating?”

Then the disciples of John came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”

One day the disciples of John the Baptist came to Jesus and asked him,“ Why don’t your disciples fast like we do and the Pharisees do?”

Then John’s disciples came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

Then the disciples of John* came to Him, asking,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

約翰的門徒和法利賽人正在禁食，有人來問耶穌說：“為甚麼約翰的門徒和法利賽人的門徒常常禁食，你的門徒卻不禁食呢？”耶穌回答：“新郎跟賓客在一起的時候，賓客怎能禁食呢？只要新郎還在，就不能禁食。但日子到了，新郎要被取去，離開他們，那一天他們就要禁食了。沒有人會把一塊新布縫在舊衣服上，如果這樣，新的布就會把舊衣服扯破，裂開的地方就更大了。也沒有人會把新酒裝在舊皮袋裡，如果這樣，酒就會把皮袋脹破，酒和皮袋都損壞了；新酒總該裝在新皮袋裡。”

他們說：“約翰的門徒常常禁食、祈禱，法利賽人的門徒也是這樣，而你的門徒卻又吃又喝。”耶穌說：“新郎跟賓客在一起的時候，你們怎麼可以叫賓客禁食呢？但日子到了，新郎要被取去，離開他們，那一天他們就要禁食了。”他又對他們設個比喻說：“沒有人會從新衣服撕下一塊布，補在舊衣服上，如果這樣，不但新衣服撕破了，而且新撕下的布，也和舊的不調和。也沒有人會把新酒裝在舊皮袋裡；如果這樣，新酒就會把皮袋脹破，不但酒漏掉，皮袋也損壞了；人總是把新酒裝在新皮袋裡。喝慣陳酒的人，就不想喝新酒，他總說陳的好。”

“你們禁食的時候，不可像偽君子那樣愁眉苦臉，他們裝成難看的樣子，叫人看出他們在禁食。我實在告訴你們，他們已經得了他們的賞賜。

約翰來了，不吃也不喝，人說他是鬼附的；人子來了，又吃又喝，人卻說：‘你看，這人貪食好酒，與稅吏和罪人為友。’但智慧藉著它所作的，就證實是公義的了。”

耶穌向那些自恃為義、輕視別人的人，講了這個比喻：“有兩個人上聖殿去祈禱，一個是法利賽人，一個是稅吏。法利賽人站著，禱告給自己聽，這樣說：‘神啊，我感謝你，我不像別人，勒索、不義、姦淫，也不像這個稅吏。我一個禮拜禁食兩次，我的一切收入都奉獻十分之一。’

約翰的門徒和一個猶太人為潔淨禮發生辯論。

很多人自稱忠誠，但信實的人，誰能遇著呢？

約翰在監獄裡聽見基督所作的，就派門徒去問他：
