那時，約翰的門徒來見耶穌，說：「我們和法利賽人常常禁食，你的門徒倒不禁食，這是為甚麼呢？」

隨後，約翰的門徒們前來問耶穌：「為什麼我們和法利賽人經常禁食，而你的門徒們卻不禁食呢？」

約翰之門徒就耶穌曰、我與𠵽唎㘔人、往往禁食、惟爾門徒不禁食、何也、

時有如望之徒晉謁曰：『吾儕及法利塞人恆齋、爾徒獨不齋何也？』

Then John’s disciples came and asked him,“ How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

One day John’s disciples came. They said to Jesus,“ We and the Pharisees often go without eating. Why don’t your disciples go without eating?”

Then the disciples of John came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”

One day the disciples of John the Baptist came to Jesus and asked him,“ Why don’t your disciples fast like we do and the Pharisees do?”

Then John’s disciples came to him, saying,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”

Then the disciples of John* came to Him, asking,“ Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”

約翰的門徒和法利賽人都在禁食的時候，有人來問耶穌：「約翰的門徒和法利賽人的門徒禁食，為什麼你的門徒不禁食呢？」耶穌對他們說：「新郎還在的時候，賓客怎能在婚宴中禁食呢？新郎還跟他們在一起的時候，他們不該禁食。但有一天新郎將被帶走，那時他們就要禁食了。「沒有人會用新布來補舊衣服，因為新布會把舊衣服扯破，破洞會更大；也沒有人把新酒倒進舊皮囊裡，否則新酒會漲破舊皮囊，酒和皮囊都毀了。所以，新酒一定要裝在新皮囊裡。」

他們說：「約翰的門徒常常禁食禱告，法利賽人的門徒也是一樣，可是你的門徒卻又吃又喝。」耶穌說：「新郎還跟賓客在一起的時候，豈能讓賓客禁食？但有一天新郎將被帶走，那時他們就要禁食了。」耶穌又給他們講了一個比喻，說：「沒有人會從新衣服上撕下一塊布來，補在舊衣服上。否則，不但新衣服撕破了，舊衣服和新補丁也不相稱。同樣，沒有人把新酒裝進舊皮囊裡，否則新酒會把舊皮囊漲破，酒也漏了，皮囊也毀了。所以新酒一定要裝在新皮囊裡。但是，沒有人喝過陳年老酒後，還願意喝新酒，因為他會說，『還是陳年老酒好。』」

「你們禁食的時候，不要像偽君子那樣愁眉苦臉，因為他們故意蓬頭垢面，好讓別人知道他們在禁食。我實在告訴你們，他們得到的賞賜不過是人的讚賞。

約翰來了，也不吃也不喝，他們就說他被鬼附身。人子來了，又吃又喝，他們就說祂是貪吃好酒之徒，與稅吏和罪人為友。然而智慧會在她的作為上得到驗證。」

耶穌對那些自以為義、藐視別人的人講了一個比喻：「有兩個人到聖殿裡禱告，一個是法利賽人，一個是稅吏。法利賽人站在那裡自言自語地禱告說，『上帝啊！我感謝你，因為我不像別人那樣勒索、不義、通姦，也不像這稅吏。我每週禁食兩次，奉獻全部收入的十分之一。』

約翰的門徒和一個猶太人為了潔淨的禮儀爭辯起來，

人都聲稱自己忠誠，但誰能找到忠信者？

約翰在監獄中聽到基督所做的事，就差兩個門徒去問祂：

耶穌得知法利賽人聽見祂收門徒、為人施洗比約翰還多，便離開猶太回加利利。其實不是耶穌親自施洗，而是祂的門徒施洗。
