because he taught them like one who had authority, not like their experts in the law.

because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

That’s because he taught like one who had authority. He did not speak like their teachers of the law.

for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

Then Jesus said to them,“ Neither will I tell you by whose authority I do these things.”

Then Jesus came up and said to them,“ All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Then Pharisees and experts in the law came from Jerusalem to Jesus and said,“ Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat.”He answered them,“ And why do you disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition?For God said,‘ Honor your father and mother’ and‘ Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.’But you say,‘ If someone tells his father or mother,“ Whatever help you would have received from me is given to God,”he does not need to honor his father.’ You have nullified the word of God on account of your tradition.Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said,‘ This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me,and they worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”

I will raise up a prophet like you for them from among their fellow Israelites. I will put my words in his mouth and he will speak to them whatever I command.I will personally hold responsible anyone who then pays no attention to the words that prophet speaks in my name.

But I am full of the courage that the LORD’s Spirit gives, and have a strong commitment to justice. This enables me to confront Jacob with its rebellion, and Israel with its sin.

The sovereign LORD has given me the capacity to be his spokesman, so that I know how to help the weary. He wakes me up every morning; he makes me alert so I can listen attentively as disciples do.

Now after Jesus entered the temple courts, the chief priests and elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching and said,“ By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”Jesus answered them,“ I will also ask you one question. If you answer me then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things.Where did John’s baptism come from? From heaven or from people?” They discussed this among themselves, saying,“ If we say,‘ From heaven,’ he will say,‘ Then why did you not believe him?’But if we say,‘ From people,’ we fear the crowd, for they all consider John to be a prophet.”So they answered Jesus,“ We don’t know.” Then he said to them,“ Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

For I tell you, unless your righteousness goes beyond that of the experts in the law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to desire her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

For I will give you the words along with the wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.

But I say to you, love your enemy and pray for those who persecute you,

“ Beware of the experts in the law. They like walking around in long robes, and they love elaborate greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.They devour widows’ property, and as a show make long prayers. They will receive a more severe punishment.”

“ The experts in the law and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat.Therefore pay attention to what they tell you and do it. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they teach.They tie up heavy loads, hard to carry, and put them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing even to lift a finger to move them.They do all their deeds to be seen by people, for they make their phylacteries wide and their tassels long.They love the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues

Yet they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke.

Let the prophet who has had a dream go ahead and tell his dream. Let the person who has received my message report that message faithfully. What is like straw cannot compare to what is like grain! I, the LORD, affirm it!My message is like a fire that purges dross! It is like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces! I, the LORD, so affirm it!

The Pharisees and the experts in the law asked him,“ Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with unwashed hands?”He said to them,“ Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written:‘ This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.They worship me in vain, teaching as doctrine the commandments of men.’Having no regard for the command of God, you hold fast to human tradition.”He also said to them,“ You neatly reject the commandment of God in order to set up your tradition.For Moses said,‘ Honor your father and your mother,’ and,‘ Whoever insults his father or mother must be put to death.’But you say that if anyone tells his father or mother,‘ Whatever help you would have received from me is corban’( that is, a gift for God),then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother.Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like this.”

Moses said,‘ The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must obey him in everything he tells you.Every person who does not obey that prophet will be destroyed and thus removed from the people.’

“ Woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You cross land and sea to make one convert, and when you get one, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves!“ Woe to you, blind guides, who say,‘ Whoever swears by the temple is bound by nothing. But whoever swears by the gold of the temple is bound by the oath.’Blind fools! Which is greater, the gold or the temple that makes the gold sacred?And,‘ Whoever swears by the altar is bound by nothing. But if anyone swears by the gift on it he is bound by the oath.’You are blind! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and the one who dwells in it.And whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and the one who sits on it.“ Woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You give a tenth of mint, dill, and cumin, yet you neglect what is more important in the law– justice, mercy, and faithfulness! You should have done these things without neglecting the others.Blind guides! You strain out a gnat yet swallow a camel!

But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Surely the king’s authority is absolute; no one can say to him,“ What are you doing?”
