“ You have heard that it was said to the people long ago,‘ You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’

“ You have heard what was said to people who lived long ago. They were told,‘ Do not commit murder.( Exodus 20:13) Anyone who murders will be judged for it.’

“ You have heard that it was said to those of old,‘ You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’

“ You have heard that our ancestors were told,‘ You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’

“ You have heard that it was said to our ancestors, Do not murder, and whoever murders will be subject to judgment.

“ You have heard that the ancients were told,‘ You shall not murder,’ and‘ Whoever commits murder shall be answerable to the court.’

“ You have heard that it was said to those of old,‘ You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’

“ One who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death,but not if it is unintentional, but God allows it to happen; then I will appoint you a place where he shall flee.If a man schemes and comes presumptuously on his neighbor to kill him, you shall take him from my altar, that he may die.

“ You have heard that it was said,‘ You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’

I will surely require accounting for your life’s blood. At the hand of every animal I will require it. At the hand of man, even at the hand of every man’s brother, I will require the life of man.Whoever sheds man’s blood, his blood will be shed by man, for God made man in his own image.

“ Again you have heard that it was said to the ancient ones,‘ You shall not make false vows, but shall perform to the Lord your vows,’

They shall answer and say,“ Our hands have not shed this blood, neither have our eyes seen it.Forgive, Yahweh, your people Israel, whom you have redeemed, and don’t allow innocent blood among your people Israel.” The blood shall be forgiven them.So you shall put away the innocent blood from among you, when you shall do that which is right in Yahweh’s eyes.

“‘ But if he struck him with an instrument of iron, so that he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death.If he struck him with a stone in the hand, by which a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death.Or if he struck him with a weapon of wood in the hand, by which a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death.The avenger of blood shall himself put the murderer to death. When he meets him, he shall put him to death.If he shoved him out of hatred, or hurled something at him while lying in wait, so that he died,or in hostility struck him with his hand, so that he died, he who struck him shall surely be put to death. He is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he meets him.

The cities shall be for your refuge from the avenger, that the man slayer not die until he stands before the congregation for judgment.

“ You have heard that it was said,‘ An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’

“ You have heard that it was said,‘ You shall not commit adultery;’

“ Please inquire of past generations. Find out about the learning of their fathers.( For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days on earth are a shadow.)Shall they not teach you, tell you, and utter words out of their heart?

“ Moreover you know also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, even what he did to the two captains of the armies of Israel, to Abner the son of Ner, and to Amasa the son of Jether, whom he killed, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war on his sash that was around his waist, and in his sandals that were on his feet.Do therefore according to your wisdom, and don’t let his gray head go down to Sheol in peace.

Then she spoke, saying,“ They used to say in old times,‘ They shall surely ask counsel at Abel;’ and so they settled a matter.

You shall make judges and officers in all your gates, which Yahweh your God gives you, according to your tribes; and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment.

The king said to him,“ Do as he has said, and fall on him, and bury him; that you may take away the blood, which Joab shed without cause, from me and from my father’s house.Yahweh will return his blood on his own head, because he fell on two men more righteous and better than he, and killed them with the sword, and my father David didn’t know it: Abner the son of Ner, captain of the army of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the army of Judah.
