“ You have heard that it was said to the people long ago,‘ You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’

“ You have heard what was said to people who lived long ago. They were told,‘ Do not commit murder.( Exodus 20:13) Anyone who murders will be judged for it.’

“ You have heard that our ancestors were told,‘ You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’

“ You have heard that it was said to our ancestors, Do not murder, and whoever murders will be subject to judgment.

“ You have heard that the ancients were told,‘ You shall not murder,’ and‘ Whoever commits murder shall be answerable to the court.’

“ You have heard that it was said,‘ You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’

And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it and from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man.“ Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.

“ Again you have heard that it was said to those of old,‘ You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’

and they shall testify,‘ Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it shed.Accept atonement, O Lord, for your people Israel, whom you have redeemed, and do not set the guilt of innocent blood in the midst of your people Israel, so that their blood guilt be atoned for.’So you shall purge the guilt of innocent blood from your midst, when you do what is right in the sight of the Lord.

“ But if he struck him down with an iron object, so that he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall be put to death.And if he struck him down with a stone tool that could cause death, and he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall be put to death.Or if he struck him down with a wooden tool that could cause death, and he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall be put to death.The avenger of blood shall himself put the murderer to death; when he meets him, he shall put him to death.And if he pushed him out of hatred or hurled something at him, lying in wait, so that he died,or in enmity struck him down with his hand, so that he died, then he who struck the blow shall be put to death. He is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he meets him.

The cities shall be for you a refuge from the avenger, that the manslayer may not die until he stands before the congregation for judgment.

“ For inquire, please, of bygone ages, and consider what the fathers have searched out.For we are but of yesterday and know nothing, for our days on earth are a shadow.Will they not teach you and tell you and utter words out of their understanding?

“ Moreover, you also know what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, how he dealt with the two commanders of the armies of Israel, Abner the son of Ner, and Amasa the son of Jether, whom he killed, avenging in time of peace for blood that had been shed in war, and putting the blood of war on the belt around his waist and on the sandals on his feet.Act therefore according to your wisdom, but do not let his gray head go down to Sheol in peace.

Then she said,“ They used to say in former times,‘ Let them but ask counsel at Abel,’ and so they settled a matter.

“ You shall appoint judges and officers in all your towns that the Lord your God is giving you, according to your tribes, and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment.

The king replied to him,“ Do as he has said, strike him down and bury him, and thus take away from me and from my father’s house the guilt for the blood that Joab shed without cause.The Lord will bring back his bloody deeds on his own head, because, without the knowledge of my father David, he attacked and killed with the sword two men more righteous and better than himself, Abner the son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, commander of the army of Judah.
