When Elijah heard it, he pulled his coat over his face. He went out and stood at the entrance to the cave. Then a voice said to him,“ Elijah, what are you doing here?”

Then he went out to the gate leading into the courtyard. There another servant saw him. She said to the people,“ This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

Peter was below in the courtyard. One of the high priest’s female servants came by.When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him.“ You also were with Jesus, that Nazarene,” she said.But Peter said he had not been with him.“ I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,” he said. He went out to the entrance to the courtyard.The servant saw him there. She said again to those standing around,“ This fellow is one of them.”Again he said he was not. After a little while, those standing nearby said to Peter,“ You must be one of them. You are from Galilee.”Then Peter began to curse. He said to them,“ I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”Right away the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had spoken to him.“ The rooster will crow twice,” he had said.“ Before it does, you will say three times that you don’t know me.” Peter broke down and cried.

There he went into a cave and spent the night. A message came to Elijah from the Lord. He said,“ Elijah, what are you doing here?”

Then the chief priests met with the elders of the people. They met in the palace of Caiaphas, the high priest.

Not too far away, Peter followed Jesus. He went right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see what would happen.

“ Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked.“ Come and see,” said Philip.

They replied,“ Are you from Galilee too? Look into it. You will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”

After this, Judas from Galilee came along. This was in the days when the Romans made a list of all the people. Judas led a gang of men against the Romans. He too was killed. All his followers were scattered.

Others said,“ He is the Messiah.” Still others asked,“ How can the Messiah come from Galilee?

But Peter had to wait outside by the door. The other disciple came back. He was the one the high priest knew. He spoke to the servant woman who was on duty there. Then he brought Peter in.She asked Peter,“ You aren’t one of Jesus’ disciples too, are you?”“ I am not,” he replied.It was cold. The slaves and officials stood around a fire. They had made it to keep warm. Peter was also standing with them. He was warming himself.

Some people there started a fire in the middle of the courtyard. Then they sat down together. Peter sat down with them.A female servant saw him sitting there in the firelight. She looked closely at him. Then she said,“ This man was with Jesus.”But Peter said he had not been with him.“ Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.A little later someone else saw Peter.“ You also are one of them,” he said.“ No,” Peter replied.“ I’m not!”About an hour later, another person spoke up.“ This fellow must have been with Jesus,” he said.“ He is from Galilee.”Peter replied,“ Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed.The Lord turned and looked right at Peter. Then Peter remembered what the Lord had spoken to him.“ The rooster will crow today,” Jesus had said.“ Before it does, you will say three times that you don’t know me.”Peter went outside. He broke down and cried.

God saved Lot, a man who did what was right. Lot was shocked by the evil conduct of people who didn’t obey God’s laws.That good man lived among them day after day. He saw and heard the evil things they were doing. They were breaking God’s laws. And the godly spirit of Lot was deeply troubled.Since all this is true, then the Lord knows how to save godly people. He knows how to keep them safe in times of testing. The Lord also knows how to keep ungodly people under guard. He will do so until the day they will be judged and punished.

But then he heard that Archelaus was king of Judea. Archelaus was ruling in place of his father Herod. This made Joseph afraid to go there. Joseph had been warned in a dream. So he went back to the land of Galilee instead.There he lived in a town called Nazareth. So what the prophets had said about Jesus came true. They had said that he would be called a Nazarene.

Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself by the fire. So they asked him,“ You aren’t one of Jesus’ disciples too, are you?” He said,“ I am not.”One of the high priest’s slaves was a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off. He said to Peter,“ Didn’t I see you with Jesus in the garden?”Again Peter said no. At that exact moment a rooster began to crow.

Blessed is the person who obeys the law of the Lord. They don’t follow the advice of evil people. They don’t make a habit of doing what sinners do. They don’t join those who make fun of the Lord and his law.

The crowds answered,“ This is Jesus. He is the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”
