But Peter declared,“ Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.

“ But why can’t I come now, Lord?” he asked.“ I’m ready to die for you.”

And all the people responded together,“ We will do everything the Lord has commanded.” So Moses brought the people’s answer back to the Lord.

But Jesus answered by saying to them,“ You don’t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink?”“ Oh yes,” they replied,“ we are able!”Jesus told them,“ You will indeed drink from my bitter cup. But I have no right to say who will sit on my right or my left. My Father has prepared those places for the ones he has chosen.”When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant.

And remember that the heavenly Father to whom you pray has no favorites. He will judge or reward you according to what you do. So you must live in reverent fear of him during your time here as“ temporary residents.”

If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall.

Yes, but remember— those branches were broken off because they didn’t believe in Christ, and you are there because you do believe. So don’t think highly of yourself, but fear what could happen.

Pride ends in humiliation, while humility brings honor.

Blessed are those who fear to do wrong, but the stubborn are headed for serious trouble.

Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear.
