I am the Lord your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.“ But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me.So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices.

“ Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.

My people are determined to turn from me. Even though they call me God Most High, I will by no means exalt them.

yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

But concerning Israel he says,“ All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.”

But since you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand,since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke,I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock when calamity overtakes you—when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you.“ Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me,since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the Lord.Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke,they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them;

But the more they were called, the more they went away from me. They sacrificed to the Baals and they burned incense to images.

But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them— bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.

As soon as you enter the town, you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. The people will not begin eating until he comes, because he must bless the sacrifice; afterward, those who are invited will eat. Go up now; you should find him about this time.”

Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits.These were his instructions:“ Take nothing for the journey except a staff— no bread, no bag, no money in your belts.Wear sandals but not an extra shirt.Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town.And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”

and saying,“ Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

“ The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him.

Wisdom has built her house; she has set up its seven pillars.She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine; she has also set her table.She has sent out her servants, and she calls from the highest point of the city,

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.

When one of those at the table with him heard this, he said to Jesus,“ Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.”Jesus replied:“ A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests.At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited,‘ Come, for everything is now ready.’

And though the Lord has sent all his servants the prophets to you again and again, you have not listened or paid any attention.

This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says:“ In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.

Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.As you go, proclaim this message:‘ The kingdom of heaven has come near.’

The Lord announces the word, and the women who proclaim it are a mighty throng:

See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven?
