That same day Jesus was approached by some Sadducees— religious leaders who say there is no resurrection from the dead. They posed this question:

But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to watch him baptize, he denounced them.“ You brood of snakes!” he exclaimed.“ Who warned you to flee the coming wrath?

While Peter and John were speaking to the people, they were confronted by the priests, the captain of the Temple guard, and some of the Sadducees.

The high priest and his officials, who were Sadducees, were filled with jealousy.

They posed this question:“ Teacher, Moses gave us a law that if a man dies, leaving a wife without children, his brother should marry the widow and have a child who will carry on the brother’s name.Well, suppose there were seven brothers. The oldest one married and then died without children.So the second brother married the widow, but he also died without children. Then the third brother married her.This continued with all seven of them, and still there were no children. Last of all, the woman also died.So tell us, whose wife will she be in the resurrection? For all seven were married to her.”Jesus replied,“ Your mistake is that you don’t know the Scriptures, and you don’t know the power of God.For when the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage. In this respect they will be like the angels in heaven.“ But now, as to whether the dead will be raised— haven’t you ever read about this in the writings of Moses, in the story of the burning bush? Long after Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had died, God said to Moses,‘ I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’So he is the God of the living, not the dead. You have made a serious error.”

Paul realized that some members of the high council were Sadducees and some were Pharisees, so he shouted,“ Brothers, I am a Pharisee, as were my ancestors! And I am on trial because my hope is in the resurrection of the dead!”This divided the council— the Pharisees against the Sadducees—for the Sadducees say there is no resurrection or angels or spirits, but the Pharisees believe in all of these.

Long after Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had died, he referred to the Lord as‘ the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’So he is the God of the living, not the dead, for they are all alive to him.”“ Well said, Teacher!” remarked some of the teachers of religious law who were standing there.And then no one dared to ask him any more questions.

But tell me this— since we preach that Christ rose from the dead, why are some of you saying there will be no resurrection of the dead?For if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised either.And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless.

They have left the path of truth, claiming that the resurrection of the dead has already occurred; in this way, they have turned some people away from the faith.

“ Watch out!” Jesus warned them.“ Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
