Watching for their opportunity, the leaders sent spies pretending to be honest men. They tried to get Jesus to say something that could be reported to the Roman governor so he would arrest Jesus.“ Teacher,” they said,“ we know that you speak and teach what is right and are not influenced by what others think. You teach the way of God truthfully.Now tell us— is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”He saw through their trickery and said,“ Show me a Roman coin. Whose picture and title are stamped on it?”“ Caesar’s,” they replied.“ Well then,” he said,“ give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.”So they failed to trap him by what he said in front of the people. Instead, they were amazed by his answer, and they became silent.

Later the leaders sent some Pharisees and supporters of Herod to trap Jesus into saying something for which he could be arrested.“ Teacher,” they said,“ we know how honest you are. You are impartial and don’t play favorites. You teach the way of God truthfully. Now tell us— is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?Should we pay them, or shouldn’t we?” Jesus saw through their hypocrisy and said,“ Why are you trying to trap me? Show me a Roman coin, and I’ll tell you.”When they handed it to him, he asked,“ Whose picture and title are stamped on it?”“ Caesar’s,” they replied.“ Well, then,” Jesus said,“ give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.” His reply completely amazed them.

They are always twisting what I say; they spend their days plotting to harm me.They come together to spy on me— watching my every step, eager to kill me.Don’t let them get away with their wickedness; in your anger, O God, bring them down.

The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the Lord and against his anointed one.

They have set an ambush for me. Fierce enemies are out there waiting, Lord, though I have not sinned or offended them.

Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people; then you won’t become weary and give up.

I have heard the many rumors about me. They call me“ The Man Who Lives in Terror.” They threaten,“ If you say anything, we will report it.” Even my old friends are watching me, waiting for a fatal slip.“ He will trap himself,” they say,“ and then we will get our revenge on him.”

They visit me as if they were my friends, but all the while they gather gossip, and when they leave, they spread it everywhere.

Then the people said,“ Come on, let’s plot a way to stop Jeremiah. We have plenty of priests and wise men and prophets. We don’t need him to teach the word and give us advice and prophecies. Let’s spread rumors about him and ignore what he says.”

As Jesus was leaving, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees became hostile and tried to provoke him with many questions.They wanted to trap him into saying something they could use against him.

My enemies have set a trap for me. I am weary from distress. They have dug a deep pit in my path, but they themselves have fallen into it. Interlude

Those who convict the innocent by their false testimony will disappear. A similar fate awaits those who use trickery to pervert justice and who tell lies to destroy the innocent.
