Whose likeness and inscription does it have?” They said,“ Caesar’s.”He said to them,“ Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”And they were not able in the presence of the people to catch him in what he said, but marveling at his answer they became silent.

And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Herodians, to trap him in his talk.And they came and said to him,“ Teacher, we know that you are true and do not care about anyone’s opinion. For you are not swayed by appearances, but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?”But, knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them,“ Why put me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.”And they brought one. And he said to them,“ Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said to him,“ Caesar’s.”Jesus said to them,“ Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they marveled at him.

All day long they injure my cause; all their thoughts are against me for evil.They stir up strife, they lurk; they watch my steps, as they have waited for my life.For their crime will they escape? In wrath cast down the peoples, O God!

The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,

For behold, they lie in wait for my life; fierce men stir up strife against me. For no transgression or sin of mine, O Lord,

Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.

For I hear many whispering. Terror is on every side!“ Denounce him! Let us denounce him!” say all my close friends, watching for my fall.“ Perhaps he will be deceived; then we can overcome him and take our revenge on him.”

And when one comes to see me, he utters empty words, while his heart gathers iniquity; when he goes out, he tells it abroad.

Then they said,“ Come, let us make plots against Jeremiah, for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not pay attention to any of his words.”

As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things,lying in wait for him, to catch him in something he might say.

They set a net for my steps; my soul was bowed down. They dug a pit in my way, but they have fallen into it themselves. Selah

who by a word make a man out to be an offender, and lay a snare for him who reproves in the gate, and with an empty plea turn aside him who is in the right.
