But the vinedressers beat him and sent him away empty-handed.Again he sent another servant; and they beat him also, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.And again he sent a third; and they wounded him also and cast him out.“ Then the owner of the vineyard said,‘ What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Probably they will respect him when they see him.’But when the vinedressers saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying,‘ This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.’So they cast him out of the vineyard and killed him. Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do to them?He will come and destroy those vinedressers and give the vineyard to others.” And when they heard it they said,“ Certainly not!”Then He looked at them and said,“ What then is this that is written:‘ The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone’?Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they feared the people— for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.

Then He began to speak to them in parables:“ A man planted a vineyard and set a hedge around it, dug a place for the wine vat and built a tower. And he leased it to vinedressers and went into a far country.Now at vintage-time he sent a servant to the vinedressers, that he might receive some of the fruit of the vineyard from the vinedressers.And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed.Again he sent them another servant, and at him they threw stones, wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully treated.And again he sent another, and him they killed; and many others, beating some and killing some.Therefore still having one son, his beloved, he also sent him to them last, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’But those vinedressers said among themselves,‘ This is the heir. Yet I had planted you a noble vine, a seed of highest quality. How then have you turned before Me Into the degenerate plant of an alien vine?

Therefore He said:“ A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return.

“ You shall appoint judges and officers in all your gates, which the Lord your God gives you, according to your tribes, and they shall judge the people with just judgment.

It is like a man going to a far country, who left his house and gave authority to his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to watch.

And you shall come to the priests, the Levites, and to the judge there in those days, and inquire of them; they shall pronounce upon you the sentence of judgment.You shall do according to the sentence which they pronounce upon you in that place which the Lord chooses. And you shall be careful to do according to all that they order you.According to the sentence of the law in which they instruct you, according to the judgment which they tell you, you shall do; you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left from the sentence which they pronounce upon you.Now the man who acts presumptuously and will not heed the priest who stands to minister there before the Lord your God, or the judge, that man shall die. So you shall put away the evil from Israel.

You have brought a vine out of Egypt; You have cast out the nations, and planted it.You prepared room for it, And caused it to take deep root, And it filled the land.The hills were covered with its shadow, And the mighty cedars with its boughs.She sent out her boughs to the Sea, And her branches to the River.Why have You broken down her hedges, So that all who pass by the way pluck her fruit?The boar out of the woods uproots it, And the wild beast of the field devours it.Return, we beseech You, O God of hosts; Look down from heaven and see, And visit this vineAnd the vineyard which Your right hand has planted, And the branch that You made strong for Yourself.It is burned with fire, it is cut down; They perish at the rebuke of Your countenance.

He walked with Me in peace and equity, And turned many away from iniquity.“ For the lips of a priest should keep knowledge, And people should seek the law from his mouth; For he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts.But you have departed from the way; You have caused many to stumble at the law. You have corrupted the covenant of Levi,” Says the Lord of hosts.“ Therefore I also have made you contemptible and base Before all the people, Because you have not kept My ways But have shown partiality in the law.”

So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and knowledgeable men, and made them heads over you, leaders of thousands, leaders of hundreds, leaders of fifties, leaders of tens, and officers for your tribes.“ Then I commanded your judges at that time, saying,‘ Hear the cases between your brethren, and judge righteously between a man and his brother or the stranger who is with him.You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small as well as the great; you shall not be afraid in any man’s presence, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, bring to me, and I will hear it.’
