So the soldiers led him into the palace( that is, the governor’s residence) and called together the whole cohort.They put a purple cloak on him and after braiding a crown of thorns, they put it on him.They began to salute him:“ Hail, king of the Jews!”Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Then they knelt down and paid homage to him.When they had finished mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

For I passed on to you as of first importance what I also received– that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures,and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures,and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.Then he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep.Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.

this man, who was handed over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you executed by nailing him to a cross at the hands of Gentiles.

Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the governor’s residence and gathered the whole cohort around him.They stripped him and put a scarlet robe around him,and after braiding a crown of thorns, they put it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand, and kneeling down before him, they mocked him:“ Hail, king of the Jews!”They spat on him and took the staff and struck him repeatedly on the head.When they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the Roman governor’s residence.( Now it was very early morning.) They did not go into the governor’s residence so they would not be ceremonially defiled, but could eat the Passover meal.So Pilate came outside to them and said,“ What accusation do you bring against this man?”They replied,“ If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.”Pilate told them,“ Take him yourselves and pass judgment on him according to your own law!” The Jewish leaders replied,“ We cannot legally put anyone to death.”( This happened to fulfill the word Jesus had spoken when he indicated what kind of death he was going to die.)So Pilate went back into the governor’s residence, summoned Jesus, and asked him,“ Are you the king of the Jews?”Jesus replied,“ Are you saying this on your own initiative, or have others told you about me?”Pilate answered,“ I am not a Jew, am I? Your own people and your chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?”Jesus replied,“ My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my servants would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish authorities. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.”Then Pilate said,“ So you are a king!” Jesus replied,“ You say that I am a king. For this reason I was born, and for this reason I came into the world– to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”Pilate asked,“ What is truth?” When he had said this he went back outside to the Jewish leaders and announced,“ I find no basis for an accusation against him.

Then some began to spit on him, and to blindfold him, and to strike him with their fists, saying,“ Prophesy!” The guards also took him and beat him.

“ For indeed both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, assembled together in this city against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed,

He was despised and rejected by people, one who experienced pain and was acquainted with illness; people hid their faces from him; he was despised, and we considered him insignificant.

Those who passed by defamed him, shaking their heads and saying,“ Aha! You who can destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,save yourself and come down from the cross!”In the same way even the chief priests– together with the experts in the law– were mocking him among themselves:“ He saved others, but he cannot save himself!

The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our forefathers, has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and rejected in the presence of Pilate after he had decided to release him.But you rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a man who was a murderer be released to you.You killed the Originator of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this fact we are witnesses!And on the basis of faith in Jesus’ name, his very name has made this man– whom you see and know– strong. The faith that is through Jesus has given him this complete health in the presence of you all.

Early in the morning, after forming a plan, the chief priests with the elders and the experts in the law and the whole Sanhedrin tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.

For just as Jonah was in the belly of the huge fish for three days and three nights, so the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.

He came to us, took Paul’s belt, tied his own hands and feet with it, and said,“ The Holy Spirit says this:‘ This is the way the Jews in Jerusalem will tie up the man whose belt this is, and will hand him over to the Gentiles.’”

Then the whole group of them rose up and brought Jesus before Pilate.They began to accuse him, saying,“ We found this man subverting our nation, forbidding us to pay the tribute tax to Caesar and claiming that he himself is Christ, a king.”So Pilate asked Jesus,“ Are you the king of the Jews?” He replied,“ You say so.”Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds,“ I find no basis for an accusation against this man.”But they persisted in saying,“ He incites the people by teaching throughout all Judea. It started in Galilee and ended up here!”

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged severely.The soldiers braided a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they clothed him in a purple robe.They came up to him again and again and said,“ Hail, king of the Jews!” And they struck him repeatedly in the face.Again Pilate went out and said to the Jewish leaders,“ Look, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may know that I find no reason for an accusation against him.”

Then they spat in his face and struck him with their fists. And some slapped him,saying,“ Prophesy for us, you Christ! Who hit you?”

Even Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then, dressing him in elegant clothes, Herod sent him back to Pilate.

He will restore us in a very short time; he will heal us in a little while, so that we may live in his presence.

When I tripped, they taunted me relentlessly, and tried to bite me.

All who see me taunt me; they mock me and shake their heads.They say,“ Commit yourself to the LORD! Let the LORD rescue him! Let the LORD deliver him, for he delights in him.”

They tied him up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate the governor.Now when Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus had been condemned, he regretted what he had done and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders,saying,“ I have sinned by betraying innocent blood!” But they said,“ What is that to us? You take care of it yourself!”So Judas threw the silver coins into the temple and left. Then he went out and hanged himself.The chief priests took the silver and said,“ It is not lawful to put this into the temple treasury, since it is blood money.”After consulting together they bought the Potter’s Field with it, as a burial place for foreigners.For this reason that field has been called the“ Field of Blood” to this day.Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:“ They took the thirty silver coins, the price of the one whose price had been set by the people of Israel,and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”

Your dead will come back to life; your corpses will rise up. Wake up and shout joyfully, you who live in the ground! For you will grow like plants drenched with the morning dew, and the earth will bring forth its dead spirits.
