But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples,“ Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized himand said,“ You went into the house of uncircumcised men and ate with them.”

“ The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him.But he answered his father,‘ Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends.But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’

These people are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage.

When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy. They began to contradict what Paul was saying and heaped abuse on him.

But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered,“ This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
