I will be like a shepherd looking for his scattered flock. I will find my sheep and rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on that dark and cloudy day.

They will no longer be prey for other nations, and wild animals will no longer devour them. They will live in safety, and no one will frighten them.

They have wandered through all the mountains and all the hills, across the face of the earth, yet no one has gone to search for them.

“ My people have been lost sheep. Their shepherds have led them astray and turned them loose in the mountains. They have lost their way and can’t remember how to get back to the sheepfold.

I will search for my lost ones who strayed away, and I will bring them safely home again. I will bandage the injured and strengthen the weak. But I will destroy those who are fat and powerful. I will feed them, yes— feed them justice!

“ But what do you think about this? A man with two sons told the older boy,‘ Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.’

“ I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep.A hired hand will run when he sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep because they don’t belong to him and he isn’t their shepherd. And so the wolf attacks them and scatters the flock.The hired hand runs away because he’s working only for the money and doesn’t really care about the sheep.“ I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me,just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep.I have other sheep, too, that are not in this sheepfold. I must bring them also. They will listen to my voice, and there will be one flock with one shepherd.“ The Father loves me because I sacrifice my life so I may take it back again.No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has commanded.”When he said these things, the people were again divided in their opinions about him.Some said,“ He’s demon possessed and out of his mind. Why listen to a man like that?”Others said,“ This doesn’t sound like a man possessed by a demon! Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

And he answered,“ If you had a sheep that fell into a well on the Sabbath, wouldn’t you work to pull it out? Of course you would.

Once you were like sheep who wandered away. But now you have turned to your Shepherd, the Guardian of your souls.

All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all.

You are reasonable people. Decide for yourselves if what I am saying is true.

I have wandered away like a lost sheep; come and find me, for I have not forgotten your commands.
