The disciples asked him,“ Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

Look, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and terrible day of the LORD arrives.He will encourage fathers and their children to return to me, so that I will not come and strike the earth with judgment.”

When some of the bystanders heard it, they said,“ This man is calling for Elijah.”Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink.But the rest said,“ Leave him alone! Let’s see if Elijah will come to save him.”

So they asked him,“ Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said,“ I am not!”“ Are you the Prophet?” He answered,“ No!”

Then they asked him,“ Why do the experts in the law say that Elijah must come first?”

Then Moses and Elijah also appeared before them, talking with him.So Peter said to Jesus,“ Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you want, I will make three shelters– one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
