說了這些話以後約有八天，耶穌帶着彼得、約翰、雅各上山去禱告。正禱告的時候，他的面貌改變了，衣服潔白放光。忽然有摩西和以利亞兩個人同耶穌說話；他們在榮光裏顯現，談論耶穌去世的事，就是他在耶路撒冷將要完成的事。彼得和他的同伴都打盹，但一清醒，就看見耶穌的榮光和與他一起站着的那兩個人。二人正要和耶穌分離的時候，彼得對耶穌說：「老師，我們在這裏真好！我們來搭三座棚，一座為你，一座為摩西，一座為以利亞。」他卻不知道自己在說些甚麼。說這些話的時候，有一朵雲彩來遮蓋他們；他們一進入雲彩就很懼怕。有聲音從雲彩裏出來，說：「這是我的兒子，我所揀選的。你們要聽從他！」聲音停止後，只見耶穌獨自一人。當那些日子，門徒保持沉默，不把所看見的事告訴任何人。

於是他帶着彼得、雅各和雅各的弟弟約翰同去，不許別人跟着他。

於是他帶着彼得和西庇太的兩個兒子同去。他憂愁起來，極其難過，

我們同他在聖山的時候，親自聽見這聲音從天上出來。

這是我第三次要到你們那裏去。「任何指控都要憑兩個或三個證人的口述才能成立。」

過了六天，耶穌帶着彼得、雅各、約翰，領他們悄悄地上了高山。他在他們面前變了形像，衣服放光，極其潔白，地上漂布的人沒有一個能漂得那樣白。有以利亞和摩西向他們顯現，並且與耶穌說話。彼得對耶穌說：「拉比，我們在這裏真好！我們來搭三座棚，一座為你，一座為摩西，一座為以利亞。」彼得不知道說甚麼才好，因為他們很害怕。有一朵雲彩來遮蓋他們，又有聲音從雲彩裏出來，說：「這是我的愛子，你們要聽從他！」門徒連忙向周圍觀看，不再看見任何人，只見耶穌同他們在一起。下山的時候，耶穌囑咐他們說：「人子還沒有從死人中復活，你們不要把所看到的告訴人。」門徒將這話存記在心，彼此議論「從死人中復活」是甚麼意思。他們就問耶穌：「文士為甚麼說以利亞必須先來？」耶穌說：「以利亞的確先來復興萬事。經上不是指着人子說，他要受許多的苦和被人輕慢嗎？我告訴你們，以利亞已經來了，他們任意待他，正如經上指着他說的。」

耶穌到了他的家，除了彼得、約翰、雅各，和女兒的父母，不許別人同他進去。
