說了這些話以後約有八天，耶穌帶著彼得、約翰和雅各，上山去禱告。正禱告的時候，他的面貌就改變了，衣服潔白發光。忽然有兩個人和他談話，就是摩西和以利亞。他們在榮光裡顯現，談論他去世的事，就是他在耶路撒冷將要完成的。彼得和同伴都在打盹。醒過來之後，就看見他的榮光，並與他站在一起的那兩個人。二人正要離開他的時候，彼得對耶穌說：“主啊，我們在這裡真好！我們可以搭三個帳棚，一個為你，一個為摩西，一個為以利亞。”他根本不知道自己在說甚麼。他說這話的時候，有一片雲彩籠罩他們，他們入了雲彩，門徒就害怕起來。有聲音從雲彩裡出來，說：“這是我的兒子，我所揀選的（“這是我的兒子，我所揀選的”有些抄本作“這是我的愛子”），你們要聽從他！”聲音過了，只見耶穌獨自在那裡。在那些日子，門徒保持緘默，不把所看見的告訴任何人。

於是他不許別人跟他一起去，只帶了彼得、雅各和雅各的弟弟約翰。

他帶了彼得和西庇太的兩個兒子一起去，心裡憂愁難過，

這從天上發出來的聲音，是我們和他同在聖山上的時候，親自聽見過的。

這是我第三次到你們那裡去，各樣事情必須憑兩三個證人的口，才能確定。

過了六天，耶穌帶著彼得、雅各、約翰，領他們悄悄地上了高山，在他們面前改變了形象。他的衣服閃耀發光，極其潔白，地上漂布的沒有能漂得這樣白的。又有以利亞和摩西向他們顯現，並且跟耶穌談話。彼得對耶穌說：“拉比，我們在這裡真好！我們可以搭三個帳棚，一個為你，一個為摩西，一個為以利亞。”彼得不知道該說甚麼才好，因為他們都非常害怕。有一片雲彩來，籠罩他們，又有聲音從雲中出來：“這是我的愛子，你們要聽他。”門徒立刻周圍觀看，再也看不見別的人，只見耶穌單獨和他們在一起。他們下山的時候，耶穌吩咐他們，人子從死人中復活之前，不要把所看見的告訴人。門徒把這句話記在心裡，又彼此討論從死人中復活是甚麼意思。他們就問耶穌：“經學家為甚麼說以利亞必須先來呢？”耶穌說：“以利亞固然要先來復興一切，但聖經為甚麼又記載人子要受許多苦，被人藐視呢？其實我告訴你們，以利亞已經來了，他們卻任意待他，正如經上指著他所說的。”

到了那家，除了彼得、約翰、雅各和女孩的父母以外，他不准任何人同他進屋裡去。
