He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; Nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity.When goods increase, They increase who eat them; So what profit have the owners Except to see them with their eyes?

And He said to them,“ Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”

Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word,and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them.

“ Here is the man who did not make God his strength, But trusted in the abundance of his riches, And strengthened himself in his wickedness.”

“ No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.“ Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.For all that is in the world— the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life— is not of the Father but is of the world.

“ So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

For thus says the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem:“ Break up your fallow ground, And do not sow among thorns.

But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession.And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet.But Peter said,“ Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things.And the young men arose and wrapped him up, carried him out, and buried him.Now it was about three hours later when his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.And Peter answered her,“ Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?” She said,“ Yes, for so much.”Then Peter said to her,“ How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying her out, buried her by her husband.So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things.

Then He said to him,“ A certain man gave a great supper and invited many,and sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited,‘ Come, for all things are now ready.’But they all with one accord began to make excuses. The first said to him,‘ I have bought a piece of ground, and I must go and see it. I ask you to have me excused.’And another said,‘ I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.’Still another said,‘ I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’So that servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant,‘ Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and the maimed and the lame and the blind.’And the servant said,‘ Master, it is done as you commanded, and still there is room.’Then the master said to the servant,‘ Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.For I say to you that none of those men who were invited shall taste my supper.’”

Do not trust in oppression, Nor vainly hope in robbery; If riches increase, Do not set your heart on them.

having eyes full of adultery and that cannot cease from sin, enticing unstable souls. They have a heart trained in covetous practices, and are accursed children.They have forsaken the right way and gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;

There is one alone, without companion: He has neither son nor brother. Yet there is no end to all his labors, Nor is his eye satisfied with riches. But he never asks,“ For whom do I toil and deprive myself of good?” This also is vanity and a grave misfortune.

And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said,“ How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; They fly away like an eagle toward heaven.

He who trusts in his riches will fall, But the righteous will flourish like foliage.

“ And do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind.For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things.

Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.These are spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots;

And Achan answered Joshua and said,“ Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I have done:When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. “ But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly.

Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples,“ How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!”And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them,“ Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God!It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

Now behold, one came and said to Him,“ Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?”So He said to him,“ Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”He said to Him,“ Which ones?” Jesus said,“‘ You shall not murder,’‘ You shall not commit adultery,’‘ You shall not steal,’‘ You shall not bear false witness,’‘ Honor your father and your mother,’ and,‘ You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’”The young man said to Him,“ All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?”Jesus said to him,“ If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.Then Jesus said to His disciples,“ Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said,“ Look, my master has spared Naaman this Syrian, while not receiving from his hands what he brought; but as the Lord lives, I will run after him and take something from him.”So Gehazi pursued Naaman. When Naaman saw him running after him, he got down from the chariot to meet him, and said,“ Is all well?”And he said,“ All is well. My master has sent me, saying,‘ Indeed, just now two young men of the sons of the prophets have come to me from the mountains of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver and two changes of garments.’”So Naaman said,“ Please, take two talents.” And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of garments, and handed them to two of his servants; and they carried them on ahead of him.When he came to the citadel, he took them from their hand, and stored them away in the house; then he let the men go, and they departed.Now he went in and stood before his master. Elisha said to him,“ Where did you go, Gehazi?” And he said,“ Your servant did not go anywhere.”Then he said to him,“ Did not my heart go with you when the man turned back from his chariot to meet you? Is it time to receive money and to receive clothing, olive groves and vineyards, sheep and oxen, male and female servants?Therefore the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and your descendants forever.” And he went out from his presence leprous, as white as snow.

There is a severe evil which I have seen under the sun: Riches kept for their owner to his hurt.But those riches perish through misfortune; When he begets a son, there is nothing in his hand.
