律法和先知到約翰就結束了。從此，神的國的福音就傳開了，人人都要努力進去。

“你們應當竭力進窄門！我告訴你們，將來許多人要進去，卻是不能。

要穿戴神所賜的全副軍裝，使你們能抵擋魔鬼的詭計。因為我們的爭戰，對抗的不是有血有肉的人，而是執政的、掌權的、管轄這黑暗世界的和天上的邪靈。所以要穿起神所賜的全副軍裝，使你們在這邪惡的時代裡可以抵擋得住，並且在作完了一切之後，還能站立得穩。

不要為那必朽壞的食物操勞，卻要為那存到永生的食物操勞，就是人子所要賜給你們的，因為人子是父神所印證的。”

耶穌進了聖殿，正在教導人的時候，祭司長和民間的長老前來問他：“你憑甚麼權柄作這些事？誰給你這權柄？”耶穌回答他們：“我也要問你們一句話，如果你們告訴我，我就告訴你們我憑甚麼權柄作這些事。約翰的洗禮是從哪裡來的呢？是從天上來的，還是從人來的呢？”他們就彼此議論：“如果我們說‘是從天上來的’，他會問我們‘那你們為甚麼不信他呢？’如果我們說‘是從人來的’，我們又怕群眾，因為他們都認為約翰是先知。”於是回答耶穌：“我們不知道。”耶穌也對他們說：“我也不告訴你們，我憑甚麼權柄作這些事。“你們認為怎樣？有一個人，他有兩個兒子。他去對大兒子說：‘孩子，你今天到葡萄園去工作吧。’他說：‘我不想去。’但後來他改變主意，就去了。父親又照樣去吩咐小兒子。小兒子說：‘父親，我會去的。’後來卻沒有去。這兩個兒子，哪一個聽父親的話呢？”他們說：“大兒子。”耶穌對他們說：“我實在告訴你們：稅吏和娼妓比你們先進神的國。約翰來到你們那裡，指示你們行義路﹙或譯：“約翰在義路中，來到你們這裡”。﹚，你們不信他；稅吏和娼妓卻信了他。你們看見了之後，還是沒有改變心意去信他。

這樣看來，我所親愛的，你們素來是順服的，（不但我在你們那裡的時候是這樣，現今我不在，你們更要順服，）就應當恐懼戰兢地作成自己的救恩。

眾人和稅吏受過約翰的洗禮，聽見這話，就稱神為義。但法利賽人和律法師，未受過約翰的洗禮，就拒絕神對他們的美意。
