Where have you gotten all these wise sayings? Whose spirit speaks through you?

I correct and discipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from your indifference.

“ God has surely handed your enemy over to you this time!” Abishai whispered to David.“ Let me pin him to the ground with one thrust of the spear; I won’t need to strike twice!”“ No!” David said.“ Don’t kill him. For who can remain innocent after attacking the Lord’s anointed one?Surely the Lord will strike Saul down someday, or he will die of old age or in battle.The Lord forbid that I should kill the one he has anointed! But take his spear and that jug of water beside his head, and then let’s get out of here!”

“ I used to believe that I ought to do everything I could to oppose the very name of Jesus the Nazarene.Indeed, I did just that in Jerusalem. Authorized by the leading priests, I caused many believers there to be sent to prison. And I cast my vote against them when they were condemned to death.Many times I had them punished in the synagogues to get them to curse Jesus. I was so violently opposed to them that I even chased them down in foreign cities.

“ Who asked your opinion, you sons of Zeruiah!” David exclaimed.“ Why have you become my adversary today? This is not a day for execution, for today I am once again the king of Israel!”

But one of the men with Jesus pulled out his sword and struck the high priest’s slave, slashing off his ear.

Then he and Aaron summoned the people to come and gather at the rock.“ Listen, you rebels!” he shouted.“ Must we bring you water from this rock?”Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with the staff, and water gushed out. So the entire community and their livestock drank their fill.But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron,“ Because you did not trust me enough to demonstrate my holiness to the people of Israel, you will not lead them into the land I am giving them!”

“ The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?

So don’t bother correcting mockers; they will only hate you. But correct the wise, and they will love you.

Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you his blessing.

But Paul said to him,“ God will slap you, you corrupt hypocrite! What kind of judge are you to break the law yourself by ordering me struck like that?”Those standing near Paul said to him,“ Do you dare to insult God’s high priest?”“ I’m sorry, brothers. I didn’t realize he was the high priest,” Paul replied,“ for the Scriptures say,‘ You must not speak evil of any of your rulers.’”

Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!”

Peter declared,“ Even if everyone else deserts you, I will never desert you.”

And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!

So let us discern for ourselves what is right; let us learn together what is good.For Job also said,‘ I am innocent, but God has taken away my rights.I am innocent, but they call me a liar. My suffering is incurable, though I have not sinned.’“ Tell me, has there ever been a man like Job, with his thirst for irreverent talk?He chooses evil people as companions. He spends his time with wicked men.He has even said,‘ Why waste time trying to please God?’

“ Now’s your opportunity!” David’s men whispered to him.“ Today the Lord is telling you,‘ I will certainly put your enemy into your power, to do with as you wish.’” So David crept forward and cut off a piece of the hem of Saul’s robe.But then David’s conscience began bothering him because he had cut Saul’s robe.He said to his men,“ The Lord forbid that I should do this to my lord the king. I shouldn’t attack the Lord’s anointed one, for the Lord himself has chosen him.”So David restrained his men and did not let them kill Saul. After Saul had left the cave and gone on his way,

I take back everything I said, and I sit in dust and ashes to show my repentance.”

Jesus turned to Peter and said,“ Get away from me, Satan! You are a dangerous trap to me. You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not from God’s.”

But Job replied,“ You talk like a foolish woman. Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?” So in all this, Job said nothing wrong.

“ Do you think it is right for you to claim,‘ I am righteous before God’?For you also ask,‘ What’s in it for me? What’s the use of living a righteous life?’“ I will answer you and all your friends, too.

The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me.
