Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.

Abishai said to David,“ Today God has delivered your enemy into your hands. Now let me pin him to the ground with one thrust of the spear; I won’t strike him twice.”But David said to Abishai,“ Don’t destroy him! Who can lay a hand on the Lord’s anointed and be guiltless?As surely as the Lord lives,” he said,“ the Lord himself will strike him, or his time will come and he will die, or he will go into battle and perish.But the Lord forbid that I should lay a hand on the Lord’s anointed. Now get the spear and water jug that are near his head, and let’s go.”

“ I too was convinced that I ought to do all that was possible to oppose the name of Jesus of Nazareth.And that is just what I did in Jerusalem. On the authority of the chief priests I put many of the Lord’s people in prison, and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them.Many a time I went from one synagogue to another to have them punished, and I tried to force them to blaspheme. I was so obsessed with persecuting them that I even hunted them down in foreign cities.

David replied,“ What does this have to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? What right do you have to interfere? Should anyone be put to death in Israel today? Don’t I know that today I am king over Israel?”

With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them,“ Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?”Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron,“ Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.”

The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.

Let us discern for ourselves what is right; let us learn together what is good.“ Job says,‘ I am innocent, but God denies me justice.Although I am right, I am considered a liar; although I am guiltless, his arrow inflicts an incurable wound.’Is there anyone like Job, who drinks scorn like water?He keeps company with evildoers; he associates with the wicked.For he says,‘ There is no profit in trying to please God.’

The men said,“ This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said to you,‘ I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.’” Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe.He said to his men,“ The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.”With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way.

Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.”

Jesus turned and said to Peter,“ Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

He replied,“ You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.

“ Do you think this is just? You say,‘ I am in the right, not God.’Yet you ask him,‘ What profit is it to me, and what do I gain by not sinning?’“ I would like to reply to you and to your friends with you.
