He called the multitude to himself with his disciples, and said to them,“ Whoever wants to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.For whoever wants to save his life will lose it; and whoever will lose his life for my sake and the sake of the Good News will save it.For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world, and forfeit his life?For what will a man give in exchange for his life?For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man also will be ashamed of him, when he comes in his Father’s glory, with the holy angels.”

For if you live after the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

He who loves his life will lose it. He who hates his life in this world will keep it to eternal life.If anyone serves me, let him follow me. Where I am, there my servant will also be. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

instructing us to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we would live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present age;

Put to death therefore your members which are on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, depraved passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

Peter took him aside, and began to rebuke him, saying,“ Far be it from you, Lord! This will never be done to you.”But he turned, and said to Peter,“ Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me, for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of men.”Then Jesus said to his disciples,“ If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, and whoever will lose his life for my sake will find it.

Why do we also stand in jeopardy every hour?I affirm, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.
