有人慷慨好施，財富卻更增添；有人吝嗇過度，反招致貧窮。樂善好施的人，必得豐裕；施惠於人的，自己也必蒙施惠。

有一個人從巴力．沙利沙來，他帶給神人二十個用初熟大麥做的餅，還有新穗子，裝在他的袋子裡；以利沙說：“把這些給眾人吃吧！”他的僕人說：“我怎能把這一些食物擺在一百個人面前呢？”神人說：“給眾人吃吧，因為耶和華這樣說：‘他們要吃，而且還有剩下的。’”

摩西說：“這與我同住的人，能行的男人就有六十萬，你還說：‘我要給他們肉吃，使他們可以吃一個整月。’難道把羊群和牛群都給他們宰了，就夠他們吃嗎？或是把海裡所有的魚都給他們聚了來，就夠他們吃嗎？”耶和華對摩西說：“耶和華的手臂縮短了嗎？現在你要看看我的話對你應驗不應驗。”

耶穌回答：“他們用不著離開，你們給他們吃吧！”但門徒說：“我們這裡除了五個餅和兩條魚，甚麼也沒有。”

耶穌回答他們：“你們給他們吃吧！”門徒說：“要我們去買兩百銀幣的餅給他們吃嗎？”耶穌說：“去看看你們有多少餅！”他們知道了，就說：“五個餅，還有兩條魚。”

耶穌舉目觀看，見一大群人向他走過來，就對腓力說：“我們從哪裡買餅給這些人吃呢？”他說這話，是要試驗腓力，因他自己早已知道要怎樣作。腓力回答：“就算二百銀幣買的餅，每人分一點，也是不夠的。”有一個門徒，就是西門．彼得的弟弟安得烈，對耶穌說：“這裡有個小孩子，帶著五個大麥餅、兩條魚；只是分給這麼多人，有甚麼用呢？”
