有人慷慨好施，财富却更增添；有人吝啬过度，反招致贫穷。乐善好施的人，必得丰裕；施惠于人的，自己也必蒙施惠。

有一个人从巴力．沙利沙来，他带给神人二十个用初熟大麦做的饼，还有新穗子，装在他的袋子里；以利沙说：“把这些给众人吃吧！”他的仆人说：“我怎能把这一些食物摆在一百个人面前呢？”神人说：“给众人吃吧，因为耶和华这样说：‘他们要吃，而且还有剩下的。’”

摩西说：“这与我同住的人，能行的男人就有六十万，你还说：‘我要给他们肉吃，使他们可以吃一个整月。’难道把羊群和牛群都给他们宰了，就够他们吃吗？或是把海里所有的鱼都给他们聚了来，就够他们吃吗？”耶和华对摩西说：“耶和华的手臂缩短了吗？现在你要看看我的话对你应验不应验。”

耶稣回答：“他们用不着离开，你们给他们吃吧！”但门徒说：“我们这里除了五个饼和两条鱼，什么也没有。”

耶稣回答他们：“你们给他们吃吧！”门徒说：“要我们去买两百银币的饼给他们吃吗？”耶稣说：“去看看你们有多少饼！”他们知道了，就说：“五个饼，还有两条鱼。”

耶稣举目观看，见一大群人向他走过来，就对腓力说：“我们从哪里买饼给这些人吃呢？”他说这话，是要试验腓力，因他自己早已知道要怎样作。腓力回答：“就算二百银币买的饼，每人分一点，也是不够的。”有一个门徒，就是西门．彼得的弟弟安得烈，对耶稣说：“这里有个小孩子，带着五个大麦饼、两条鱼；只是分给这么多人，有什么用呢？”
