於是耶穌與他們一起去了。當耶穌離他家不遠的時候，百夫長又託了幾個朋友來對耶穌說：「主啊，不用麻煩了，我實在不配請你進我家，

這時候，來了一個名叫睚魯的人，他是一個會堂主管。他俯伏在耶穌腳前，懇求耶穌到他家裡去，因為他有一個約十二歲的獨生女兒，快要死了。耶穌去的時候，人群擁擠著他。有一個婦人，患了十二年的血漏病，在醫生那裡花盡了她所有的養生費用，卻沒有一個人能使她痊癒。

但亞哈斯說：「我不求，我不試探耶和華。」

耶穌還在說話的時候，有些人從會堂主管的家裡來，對睚魯說：「你的女兒已經死了，何必再麻煩老師呢？」耶穌卻當做沒聽見他們所說的話，對會堂主管說：「不要怕，只要信！」然後他除了彼得、雅各和雅各的弟弟約翰以外，不准別的人跟著。他們來到會堂主管的家裡，耶穌看見一片混亂，有人哭泣，有人哀號。耶穌進去對他們說：「為什麼慌亂哭泣呢？孩子不是死了，而是睡了。」他們就譏笑耶穌。耶穌把他們都趕出去，只帶著孩子的父母和一起來的人，進入孩子所在的地方。他握著孩子的手，對她說：「塔利達，庫莫！」——這翻譯出來就是「小女孩，我吩咐你起來！」那女孩隨即起來，開始走動。她那時十二歲。大家立刻目瞪口呆，大為驚訝。耶穌鄭重地吩咐他們，不要讓任何人知道這事，又吩咐給孩子吃東西。

耶穌來到那會堂主管的家，看見吹笛的人和慌亂的人群，就說：「你們退去吧！這女孩不是死了，而是睡了。」他們就譏笑他。那群人被趕出去以後，耶穌進去，握著女孩的手，那女孩就起來了。於是，這消息傳遍了那整個地區。

那個人從裡面回答說：『請不要煩擾我。門已經關上了，我與孩子們也已經上了床，不能起來拿給你。』
