For Jesus had already commanded the evil spirit to come out of him. This spirit had often taken control of the man. Even when he was placed under guard and put in chains and shackles, he simply broke them and rushed out into the wilderness, completely under the demon’s power.

For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.

They tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus in their incantation, saying,“ I command you in the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, to come out!”Seven sons of Sceva, a leading priest, were doing this.But one time when they tried it, the evil spirit replied,“ I know Jesus, and I know Paul, but who are you?”Then the man with the evil spirit leaped on them, overpowered them, and attacked them with such violence that they fled from the house, naked and battered.

An evil spirit keeps seizing him, making him scream. It throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It batters him and hardly ever leaves him alone.

So they brought the boy. But when the evil spirit saw Jesus, it threw the child into a violent convulsion, and he fell to the ground, writhing and foaming at the mouth.“ How long has this been happening?” Jesus asked the boy’s father. He replied,“ Since he was a little boy.The spirit often throws him into the fire or into water, trying to kill him. Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.”“ What do you mean,‘ If I can’?” Jesus asked.“ Anything is possible if a person believes.”The father instantly cried out,“ I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”When Jesus saw that the crowd of onlookers was growing, he rebuked the evil spirit.“ Listen, you spirit that makes this boy unable to hear and speak,” he said.“ I command you to come out of this child and never enter him again!”Then the spirit screamed and threw the boy into another violent convulsion and left him. The boy appeared to be dead. A murmur ran through the crowd as people said,“ He’s dead.”

As the boy came forward, the demon knocked him to the ground and threw him into a violent convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the evil spirit and healed the boy. Then he gave him back to his father.

For Jesus had already said to the spirit,“ Come out of the man, you evil spirit.”

Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will learn the truth.Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants.

This man lived in the burial caves and could no longer be restrained, even with a chain.Whenever he was put into chains and shackles— as he often was— he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him.Day and night he wandered among the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting himself with sharp stones.
