“ So pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them.”

“‘ Yes,’ the king replied,‘ and to those who use well what they are given, even more will be given. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.

He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.

To those who use well what they are given, even more will be given, and they will have an abundance. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away.

“ But God said to him,‘ You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’“ Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”

“ Listen to me and remember what I say. The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies.”

Stop deceiving yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world’s standards, you need to become a fool to be truly wise.

So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it.

If you claim to be a prophet or think you are spiritual, you should recognize that what I am saying is a command from the Lord himself.

There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.

So the employer called him in and said,‘ What’s this I hear about you? Get your report in order, because you are going to be fired.’“ The manager thought to himself,‘ Now what? My boss has fired me. I don’t have the strength to dig ditches, and I’m too proud to beg.Ah, I know how to ensure that I’ll have plenty of friends who will give me a home when I am fired.’

And the people of Berea were more open minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul’s message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror.You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.

Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding.Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding.Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures.Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God.

he added:“ Take to heart all the words of warning I have given you today. Pass them on as a command to your children so they will obey every word of these instructions.These instructions are not empty words— they are your life! By obeying them you will enjoy a long life in the land you will occupy when you cross the Jordan River.”

On judgment day many will say to me,‘ Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’But I will reply,‘ I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’

Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.

“ The day is coming when you will see the sacrilegious object that causes desecration standing where he should not be.”( Reader, pay attention!)“ Then those in Judea must flee to the hills.

If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing.If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.

Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.”Then he added,“ Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given— and you will receive even more.To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them.”

Anyone who claims to know all the answers doesn’t really know very much.

though I could have confidence in my own effort if anyone could. Indeed, if others have reason for confidence in their own efforts, I have even more!

So I sent for you at once, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here, waiting before God to hear the message the Lord has given you.”

So get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech.Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment,

Jesus said,“ There was a certain rich man who was splendidly clothed in purple and fine linen and who lived each day in luxury.At his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus who was covered with sores.As Lazarus lay there longing for scraps from the rich man’s table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores.“ Finally, the poor man died and was carried by the angels to sit beside Abraham at the heavenly banquet. The rich man also died and was buried,and he went to the place of the dead. There, in torment, he saw Abraham in the far distance with Lazarus at his side.“ The rich man shouted,‘ Father Abraham, have some pity! Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. I am in anguish in these flames.’“ But Abraham said to him,‘ Son, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish.
