John was like a burning and shining lamp, and you were excited for a while about his message.

You are very entertaining to them, like someone who sings love songs with a beautiful voice or plays fine music on an instrument. They hear what you say, but they don’t act on it!

Thieves are jealous of each other’s loot, but the godly are well rooted and bear their own fruit.

“ O Israel and Judah, what should I do with you?” asks the Lord.“ For your love vanishes like the morning mist and disappears like dew in the sunlight.

They have left the path of truth, claiming that the resurrection of the dead has already occurred; in this way, they have turned some people away from the faith.But God’s truth stands firm like a foundation stone with this inscription:“ The Lord knows those who are his,” and“ All who belong to the Lord must turn away from evil.”

And when people escape from the wickedness of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and then get tangled up and enslaved by sin again, they are worse off than before.

Yet they act so pious! They come to the Temple every day and seem delighted to learn all about me. They act like a righteous nation that would never abandon the laws of its God. They ask me to take action on their behalf, pretending they want to be near me.

They prove the truth of this proverb:“ A dog returns to its vomit.” And another says,“ A washed pig returns to the mud.”

When these people eat with you in your fellowship meals commemorating the Lord’s love, they are like dangerous reefs that can shipwreck you. They are like shameless shepherds who care only for themselves. They are like clouds blowing over the land without giving any rain. They are like trees in autumn that are doubly dead, for they bear no fruit and have been pulled up by the roots.

But we are not like those who turn away from God to their own destruction. We are the faithful ones, whose souls will be saved.

Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.

Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.

But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News. The Good News has been preached all over the world, and I, Paul, have been appointed as God’s servant to proclaim it.

Have you experienced so much for nothing? Surely it was not in vain, was it?

He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.

Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.

Perhaps he will forgive your evil thoughts,for I can see that you are full of bitter jealousy and are held captive by sin.”

Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned.

It is this Good News that saves you if you continue to believe the message I told you— unless, of course, you believed something that was never true in the first place.

Where is that joyful and grateful spirit you felt then? I am sure you would have taken out your own eyes and given them to me if it had been possible.Have I now become your enemy because I am telling you the truth?Those false teachers are so eager to win your favor, but their intentions are not good. They are trying to shut you off from me so that you will pay attention only to them.If someone is eager to do good things for you, that’s all right; but let them do it all the time, not just when I’m with you.Oh, my dear children! I feel as if I’m going through labor pains for you again, and they will continue until Christ is fully developed in your lives.I wish I were with you right now so I could change my tone. But at this distance I don’t know how else to help you.

If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing.

Then many who heard him say these things believed in him.Jesus said to the people who believed in him,“ You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Wickedness never brings stability, but the godly have deep roots.

Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.
