( All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.

All the people who heard Jesus’ words agreed that God’s way was right. Even the tax collectors agreed. These people had all been baptized by John.

( When all the people heard this, and the tax collectors too, they declared God just, having been baptized with the baptism of John,

稅吏至、欲受洗、曰：『夫子、吾當何為？』

是惟智德之子、能識智德之蘊耳。』

合奏其忠僕摩西之歌、及羔羊之歌曰：主天主兮全能、大且奇兮經綸。爾為君兮萬世、惟爾道兮仁且真。

無是理也！即使眾人皆偽、亦不能改天主之真。經云：『主言惟正、睿斷實公、』斯之謂也。曰：若人之不義、適足彰天主之義、則就人情言之、吾將何說、豈主之譴怒為不義乎？曰：惡、是何言！天主而不義、將何以審判世界？

雖僅知如望之洗、而於主之道亦曾領教、秉一片熱忱、闡述耶穌、所言精確。

抹拭我過。昭爾大仁。

葆樂曰：『然則所受何洗？』曰『如望之洗。』

二者孰孝？』對曰：『長子。』耶穌曰：『吾實語爾、稅吏娼妓、將先爾曹入天主國。蓋如望以義路開導於爾、爾不之信；而稅吏娼妓、則信之矣。爾見其事。猶未能悔悟而起信也。

吾聞掌水之天神曰「永生之神聖者乎爾之施罰義也。

蓋既昧於天主之義、故惟求自立其義、而不服膺天主之義矣。

時耶路撒冷與猶太全國、以及約但河一帶之居民。群趨如望、自承其罪、而受洗於約但河中。
