I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

我實語爾、婦女所生、未有大於施洗如望者；然天國中之小者、猶大於彼。

乃謂諸弟子曰：『見爾所見、其目福矣！予實語爾、古來無數先知及君王、欲睹爾所睹、而未得睹；欲聞爾所聞、而未得聞也。』

然福哉爾目、以有見故。福哉爾耳、以有聞故。我實語爾、古之先知義士、咸欲睹爾之所睹、而不獲睹、欲聞爾之所聞、而不獲聞也。

是實天主所托於我、對爾等應盡之本分、亦所以發揚天主之道也。斯道無他、即天主自始所蘊藏之玄妙、至今始顯示於諸聖、命其弘宣於萬邦者也。斯玄妙乃無窮景福之寶庫、而光榮希望之靈淵；即寓爾心中之基督是也。

夫我乃諸聖中之至微者、竟亦蒙此殊恩、得在異邦人中弘宣基督不可思議之厚澤、使舉世之人、咸得領會造物主自始隱藏之救世玄謨。

如望對眾曰：『吾第以水洗爾、將有威力超我者來、吾雖為之釋履、亦非所宜稱；渠將洗爾以聖神與靈火、

是即歷來先知所潛心探索而預言者、爾等則親沾其澤矣。蓋基督神靈、啟迪先知之衷、故彼等能逆知基督之先苦後樂、與夫其事之成於何時何世。彼等且逆知其所預言諸事、非為本身、乃為爾等。凡此奧義、即眾天神亦渴欲一窺、而爾曹則因布道者憑天主所遣聖神之靈感、而得諦聽矣

而謂其徒曰：『凡以予名義納此小兒者、即納予、亦即納遣予者。蓋爾中最小者、斯為大矣。』

此子不惟貽爾慰悅、即眾庶亦將因其誕生而歡欣鼓舞。彼之天爵隆高、芳醴濁醪、點滴不入、蓋自胎中已飽濡聖神矣。

凡此何一非因信德而見稱者乎？顧其未獲所許者何也？蓋天主夙為吾人備有更微妙之事、而古人之成全、實有待乎吾人者焉。
