After John’s disciples left, Jesus began talking about him to the crowds.“ What kind of man did you go into the wilderness to see? Was he a weak reed, swayed by every breath of wind?

After John’s messengers left, he began to speak to the crowds about John:“ What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind?

愛友乎、既預知之、則宜謹慎、免為惡者之謬所誘、失爾堅也、

我斯意豈輕躁乎、我所擬豈狥情而有是是非非乎、上帝乃誠信、我所語爾者、非或是或非也、我與西拉提摩太在爾中所宣上帝子耶穌基督、亦非或是或非、在彼惟是而已、蓋上帝所許者、在彼皆是、故亦皆誠、俾上帝由我儕而得榮、

但其求也、宜信而無疑、蓋疑者譬之海浪、風激而蕩漾、斯人勿意有獲於主、貳心之人、所行無定、○

維時、施洗約翰至、宣言於猶太野、曰、爾宜改悔、天國邇矣、此乃先知以賽亞所言者、曰、有呼於野者、其聲云、備主路、直其徑、夫約翰身衣駝毛、腰束皮帶、食則蝗蟲野蜜、時耶路撒冷猶太及約但四方、咸出就之、

若輩猶枯泉、狂風所蕩之霧、有晦而暗者待之、

曰我乃呼於野者之聲云、直主之路、如先知以賽亞所言也、

約翰至、在野施洗、宣改悔之洗禮、俾罪得赦、舉猶太地、及耶路撒冷人、皆出就之、在約但河受其洗、而承己罪、

惟爾如水之沸、故不卓犖、緣登父牀、而污我榻、

其人歸、耶穌舉約翰語眾曰、爾曩出野、何觀耶、風動之葦乎、抑爾出何觀耶、衣毳衣者乎、衣毳衣者、在王宮也、
