安息日，耶稣到一个法利赛人的领袖家里去吃饭，他们就窥探他。这时在他面前有一个患水肿病的人。耶稣回答律法师和法利赛人，说：“安息日治病合不合法？”他们却不说话。耶稣扶着那人，治好了他，叫他走了。耶稣对他们说：“你们中间谁有儿子或有牛在安息日掉在井里，不立刻拉他上来呢？”他们对这些事不能反驳。

众人为了要控告耶稣，就窥探他会不会在安息日医治那人。

耶稣从那里出来，文士和法利赛人就开始极力地催逼他，盘问他许多事，伺机要抓他的话柄。

会堂的主管因为耶稣在安息日治病，就很生气，对众人说：“有六天应当做工，那六天之内可以来求医，在安息日却不可。”

祭司长和全议会寻找假见证控告耶稣，要处死他。虽然有好些人来作假见证，总找不到实据。最后有两个人前来，

他们凭一句话定一个人有罪，为在城门口断是非的设下罗网，又用虚无的事屈枉义人。

恶人窥探义人，想要杀他。耶和华必不把他交在恶人手中，当审判的时候，也不定他的罪。

我听见许多的毁谤，四围都是惊吓；连我知己朋友都看着我跌倒：“告他吧，我们要告他！或者他被引诱，我们就能胜他，在他身上报仇。”

他们就问他：“他给你做了什么？是怎么开了你的眼睛？”他回答他们：“我已经告诉你们了，你们不听，为什么又要听呢？难道你们也要作他的门徒吗？”他们就骂他：“你是他的门徒，而我们是摩西的门徒。神对摩西说话是我们知道的，可是这个人，我们不知道他从哪里来。”

那寻索我命的设下罗网，那想要害我的口出恶言，整日思想诡计。

于是法利赛人中有的说：“这个人不是从神来的，因为他不守安息日。”另有的说：“一个罪人怎能行这样的神迹呢？”他们之间就产生了分裂。

所以犹太人对那被治好了的人说：“今天是安息日，你拿褥子是不合法的。”他却回答他们：“那使我痊愈的人对我说：‘拿起你的褥子走吧！’”他们问他：“对你说‘拿起褥子走’的是什么人？”那治好了的人不知道那人是谁，因为那里人很多，耶稣已经躲开了。后来耶稣在圣殿里找到他，对他说：“你已经痊愈了，不要再犯罪，免得你的遭遇更坏。”那人就去告诉犹太人，使他痊愈的是耶稣。所以犹太人迫害耶稣，因为他在安息日做了这些事。
