當時，祭司長們和全議會的人為了要處死耶穌，都在尋找偽證來控告他。雖然有許多假見證人上前來，可是他們找不出什麼。後來有兩個人上前來，

他們憑一句話就定人的罪，給城門口的裁決者設下網羅，又用虛無的事屈枉義人。

惡人窺伺義人，尋機置他於死地；但耶和華必不將他離棄在惡人的手中；在審判的時候，也不定他有罪。

他們問：「他對你做了什麼？怎麼開了你的眼睛？」他回答：「我已經告訴過你們，你們不聽，為什麼現在又想聽呢？難道你們也想成為他的門徒嗎？」他們就辱罵他，說：「你才是那個人的門徒！我們是摩西的門徒！我們知道神對摩西說過話，至於這個人，我們就不知道他是從哪裡來的！」

那些尋索我命的設下圈套，那些尋機加害我的口吐威嚇，他們終日思想詭計。

法利賽人中的有些人說：「那個人不是從神那裡來的，因為他不守安息日。」有些人卻說：「一個罪人怎麼能行這樣的神蹟呢？」他們之間就產生了分裂。

所以那些猶太人對那得了痊癒的人說：「今天是安息日，你拿著墊子是不可以的！」他就回答：「是那個使我痊癒的人對我說『拿起你的墊子走路吧。』」他們問：「對你說『拿起墊子走路』的那個人是誰？」那得了痊癒的人並不知道他是誰，因為那裡有一群人，而耶穌已經抽身離去了。這些事以後，耶穌在聖殿裡找到他，對他說：「看，你已經痊癒了。不要再犯罪，免得更嚴重的事臨到你。」那個人就去向那些猶太人報告說，使他痊癒的是耶穌。那些猶太人之所以逼迫耶穌，是因為他在安息日做這些事。
