“ But woe to you who are rich, For you have received your consolation.

“ But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort.

Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

Do not be afraid when one becomes rich, When the glory of his house is increased;For when he dies he shall carry nothing away; His glory shall not descend after him.Though while he lives he blesses himself( For men will praise you when you do well for yourself),He shall go to the generation of his fathers; They shall never see light.

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you!Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten.Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter.You have condemned, you have murdered the just; he does not resist you.

Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.

Those who trust in their wealth And boast in the multitude of their riches,None of them can by any means redeem his brother, Nor give to God a ransom for him—

But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich.And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said,“ How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

But you have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts?

And He said to them,“ Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”Then He spoke a parable to them, saying:“ The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully.And he thought within himself, saying,‘ What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’So he said,‘ I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods.And I will say to my soul,“ Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.”’But God said to him,‘ Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’“ So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

Hear this word, you cows of Bashan, who are on the mountain of Samaria, Who oppress the poor, Who crush the needy, Who say to your husbands,“ Bring wine, let us drink!”The Lord GOD has sworn by His holiness:“ Behold, the days shall come upon you When He will take you away with fishhooks, And your posterity with fishhooks.You will go out through broken walls, Each one straight ahead of her, And you will be cast into Harmon,” Says the Lord.

For I was envious of the boastful, When I saw the prosperity of the wicked.For there are no pangs in their death, But their strength is firm.They are not in trouble as other men, Nor are they plagued like other men.Therefore pride serves as their necklace; Violence covers them like a garment.Their eyes bulge with abundance; They have more than heart could wish.They scoff and speak wickedly concerning oppression; They speak loftily.They set their mouth against the heavens, And their tongue walks through the earth.Therefore his people return here, And waters of a full cup are drained by them.And they say,“ How does God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High?”Behold, these are the ungodly, Who are always at ease; They increase in riches.

“ Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

Woe to you who are at ease in Zion, And trust in Mount Samaria, Notable persons in the chief nation, To whom the house of Israel comes!Go over to Calneh and see; And from there go to Hamath the great; Then go down to Gath of the Philistines. Are you better than these kingdoms? Or is their territory greater than your territory?Woe to you who put far off the day of doom, Who cause the seat of violence to come near;Who lie on beds of ivory, Stretch out on your couches, Eat lambs from the flock And calves from the midst of the stall;Who sing idly to the sound of stringed instruments, And invent for yourselves musical instruments like David;Who drink wine from bowls, And anoint yourselves with the best ointments, But are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

Why do the wicked live and become old, Yes, become mighty in power?Their descendants are established with them in their sight, And their offspring before their eyes.Their houses are safe from fear, Neither is the rod of God upon them.Their bull breeds without failure; Their cow calves without miscarriage.They send forth their little ones like a flock, And their children dance.They sing to the tambourine and harp, And rejoice to the sound of the flute.They spend their days in wealth, And in a moment go down to the grave.Yet they say to God,‘ Depart from us, For we do not desire the knowledge of Your ways.Who is the Almighty, that we should serve Him? And what profit do we have if we pray to Him?’

“ There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day.But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate,desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.“ Then he cried and said,‘ Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’But Abraham said,‘ Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.

“ And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

For the turning away of the simple will slay them, And the complacency of fools will destroy them;

Therefore I said,“ Surely these are poor. They are foolish; For they do not know the way of the Lord, The judgment of their God.I will go to the great men and speak to them, For they have known the way of the Lord, The judgment of their God.” But these have altogether broken the yoke And burst the bonds.Therefore a lion from the forest shall slay them, A wolf of the deserts shall destroy them; A leopard will watch over their cities. Everyone who goes out from there shall be torn in pieces, Because their transgressions are many; Their backslidings have increased.

Render to her just as she rendered to you, and repay her double according to her works; in the cup which she has mixed, mix double for her.In the measure that she glorified herself and lived luxuriously, in the same measure give her torment and sorrow; for she says in her heart,‘ I sit as queen, and am no widow, and will not see sorrow.’Therefore her plagues will come in one day— death and mourning and famine. And she will be utterly burned with fire, for strong is the Lord God who judges her.

‘ The glory of this latter temple shall be greater than the former,’ says the Lord of hosts.‘ And in this place I will give peace,’ says the Lord of hosts.”
