He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John:“ What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind?

John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet,“ I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness,‘ Make straight the way for the Lord.’”

On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah,but his mother spoke up and said,“ No! He is to be called John.”They said to her,“ There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child.He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote,“ His name is John.”

“ a voice of one calling in the wilderness,‘ Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’”And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.
