While the people were filled with anticipation and they all wondered whether perhaps John could be the Christ,

As the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he was the Christ,

於是猶太人圍着他，對他說：『你使我們的心懸疑不定、要到幾時呢？你如果是基督，請坦然公開地告訴我們吧。』

你們自己能給我作見證：我曾說過：「我不是基督，我乃是奉差遣在那一位前頭的」。娶新婦的是新郎；新郎的朋友、那站着聽他的、一聽見新郎的聲音，就歡喜快樂；所以我的這喜樂是已得完滿了。

以下是約翰的見證：當時猶太人從耶路撒冷差遣祭司和利未人來見約翰，詰問他說：『你是誰？』約翰承認而不否認；他承認說：『我不是上帝所膏立者基督。』他們又詰問他說：『那麼、是甚麼呢？你是以利亞麼？』他說：『我不是。』『你是那位神言人麼？』他回答說：『不是。』於是他們問他們說：『你是誰？請明說，讓我們好給差我們的人回覆啊；關於你自己、你怎麼說呢？』約翰說：『我乃是在野地裏呼喊者的聲音說：「修直主的道路」，正如神言人以賽亞所說的。』那些被差遣的有些是法利賽派的人。他們詰問約翰說：『你既不是上帝所膏立者基督，又不是以利亞，也不是那位神言人，那你為甚麼施洗呢？』約翰回答他們說：『我是用水施洗的；但有一位你們不認識的、站在你們中間，就是那在我以後來的，我配不起他、去解他的鞋帶的。』這些事是在約但河外的伯大尼、約翰施洗的地方、發生的。
