犹太人的祭司长们对彼拉多说：“请不要写‘犹太人的王’，而要写‘这个人说：我是犹太人的王。’”彼拉多回答：“我所写的，我已经写了。”士兵们将耶稣钉上十字架以后，把他的衣服拿来分成四份，每人一份。他们又拿了里衣，这件里衣没有接缝，从上到下由整片织成。他们彼此说：“不要把它撕开，让我们抽签，看它是谁的。”这是为要应验经上的话：“他们分了我的衣服，又为我的衣裳抽签。”士兵们果然做了这些事。在耶稣的十字架旁边，站着他的母亲、他母亲的妹妹、克罗帕的妻子玛丽亚，以及茉大拉的玛丽亚。耶稣看到母亲和他所爱的那门徒站在旁边，就对母亲说：“母亲，看哪，你的儿子！”然后对那门徒说：“看哪，你的母亲！”从那时候起，那门徒就把耶稣的母亲接到自己的家里。
