耶稣说这话是指自己将要怎样死。众人回答他：“我们从律法中听到，基督是永远长存的。你怎么说‘人子必须被举起来’呢？这‘人子’到底是谁？”

这一位照着神设定的计划和先见被交出去；你们就藉着外邦人的手，把他钉上十字架杀了。

“你们知道，过两天就是逾越节，人子要被交出去钉上十字架。”

群狗围绕我，一伙恶党包围我，他们刺穿我的双手、我的双脚；

当他们做完了经上所记载的一切有关耶稣的事，有些人就把他从木头上取下来，安放在墓穴里。

基督替我们成了诅咒，从律法的诅咒中救赎了我们，因为经上记着：“凡是被挂在木头上的，都是被诅咒的。”

所以耶稣为了藉着自己的血使子民分别为圣，也在城门外受难。因此，让我们到营地外面他那里去，担当他所受的责骂。

他在木头上，以自己的身体亲自担当了我们的罪孽，好使我们既然向罪而死，就能向义而活；因他受的鞭伤，你们得了痊愈。

说：“看，我们现在上耶路撒冷去，人子将被出卖给祭司长们和经文士们。他们要定他死罪，并且要把他交给外邦人。他们要戏弄他、向他吐唾沫、鞭打他，并杀害他；然后在第三天，他要复活。”

摩西在旷野怎样把铜蛇举起，人子也必须照样被举起来，

你们挂在木头上杀害的耶稣，我们祖先的神已经使他复活了。

这是为要应验耶稣说过的话，就是他指明自己将要怎样死的那些话。

并且要把他交给外邦人去戏弄、鞭打、钉上十字架；然后在第三天，他要复活。”
