They began to accuse him, saying,“ We found this man subverting our nation, forbidding us to pay the tribute tax to Caesar and claiming that he himself is Christ, a king.”

And they began to accuse him, saying,“ We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king.”

They began to bring charges against Jesus. They said,“ We have found this man misleading our people. He is against paying taxes to Caesar. And he claims to be Messiah, a king.”

And they began to accuse him, saying,“ We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king.”

They began to state their case:“ This man has been leading our people astray by telling them not to pay their taxes to the Roman government and by claiming he is the Messiah, a king.”

They began to accuse him, saying,“ We found this man misleading our nation, opposing payment of taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.”

And they began to bring charges against Him, saying,“ We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.”

And they began to accuse Him, saying,“ We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.”

From this point on, Pilate tried to release him. But the Jewish leaders shouted out,“ If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar! Everyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar!”

When they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city officials, screaming,“ These people who have stirred up trouble throughout the world have come here too,and Jason has welcomed them as guests! They are all acting against Caesar’s decrees, saying there is another king named Jesus!”

and said to them,“ You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people. When I examined him before you, I did not find this man guilty of anything you accused him of doing.

Also seat two villains opposite him and have them testify,‘ You cursed God and the king.’ Then take him out and stone him to death.”The men of the city, the leaders and the nobles who lived there, followed the written orders Jezebel had sent them.They observed a time of fasting and put Naboth in front of the people.The two villains arrived and sat opposite him. Then the villains testified against Naboth right before the people, saying,“ Naboth cursed God and the king.” So they dragged him outside the city and stoned him to death.

Next I eradicated the three shepherds in one month, for I ran out of patience with them and, indeed, they detested me as well.

Yet do it with courtesy and respect, keeping a good conscience, so that those who slander your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame when they accuse you.For it is better to suffer for doing good, if God wills it, than for doing evil.Because Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, to bring you to God, by being put to death in the flesh but by being made alive in the spirit.

So these officials said to the king,“ This man must be put to death. For he is demoralizing the soldiers who are left in the city as well as all the other people there by these things he is saying. This man is not seeking to help these people but is trying to harm them.”

When they had brought them before the magistrates, they said,“ These men are throwing our city into confusion. They are Jewsand are advocating customs that are not lawful for us to accept or practice, since we are Romans.”

They replied,“ If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.”

I hear many whispering words of intrigue against me. Those who would cause me terror are everywhere! They are saying,“ Come on, let’s publicly denounce him!” All my so-called friends are just watching for something that would lead to my downfall. They say,“ Perhaps he can be enticed into slipping up, so we can prevail over him and get our revenge on him.

They spend all their time planning how to bring him down. They love to use deceit; they pronounce blessings with their mouths, but inwardly they utter curses.( Selah)

For we have found this man to be a troublemaker, one who stirs up riots among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.

Then Jesus said to them,“ Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they were utterly amazed at him.

But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”So they all said,“ Are you the Son of God, then?” He answered them,“ You say that I am.”

But he was silent and did not answer. Again the high priest questioned him,“ Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”“ I am,” said Jesus,“ and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”

Then the chief priests began to accuse him repeatedly.So Pilate asked him again,“ Have you nothing to say? See how many charges they are bringing against you!”But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed.

They replied,“ Caesar’s.” He said to them,“ Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

They sharpen their tongues like a sword; they aim their arrow, a slanderous charge,in order to shoot down the innocent in secluded places. They shoot at him suddenly and are unafraid of retaliation.They encourage one another to carry out their evil deed. They plan how to hide snares, and boast,“ Who will see them?”They devise unjust schemes; they disguise a well-conceived plot. Man’s inner thoughts cannot be discovered.

But they persisted in saying,“ He incites the people by teaching throughout all Judea. It started in Galilee and ended up here!”

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were trying to find false testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death.But they did not find anything, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward

Violent men perjure themselves, and falsely accuse me.

Then they watched him carefully and sent spies who pretended to be sincere. They wanted to take advantage of what he might say so that they could deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor.Thus they asked him,“ Teacher, we know that you speak and teach correctly, and show no partiality, but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.Is it right for us to pay the tribute tax to Caesar or not?”But Jesus perceived their deceit and said to them,“ Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?” They said,“ Caesar’s.”So he said to them,“ Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find anything.Many gave false testimony against him, but their testimony did not agree.

But so that we don’t offend them, go to the lake and throw out a hook. Take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth, you will find a four drachma coin. Take that and give it to them for me and you.”

But he only got as far as the Benjamin Gate. There an officer in charge of the guards named Irijah, who was the son of Shelemiah and the grandson of Hananiah, stopped him. He seized Jeremiah and said,“ You are deserting to the Babylonians!”Jeremiah answered,“ That’s a lie! I am not deserting to the Babylonians.” But Irijah would not listen to him. Irijah put Jeremiah under arrest and took him to the officials.The officials were very angry at Jeremiah. They had him flogged and put in prison in the house of Jonathan, the royal secretary, which they had converted into a place for confining prisoners.

nor can they prove to you the things they are accusing me of doing.

Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent this message to King Jeroboam of Israel:“ Amos is conspiring against you in the very heart of the kingdom of Israel! The land cannot endure all his prophecies.

When Ahab saw Elijah, he said to him,“ Is it really you, the one who brings disaster on Israel?”

So Pilate went back into the governor’s residence, summoned Jesus, and asked him,“ Are you the king of the Jews?”Jesus replied,“ Are you saying this on your own initiative, or have others told you about me?”Pilate answered,“ I am not a Jew, am I? Your own people and your chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?”Jesus replied,“ My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my servants would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish authorities. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.”Then Pilate said,“ So you are a king!” Jesus replied,“ You say that I am a king. For this reason I was born, and for this reason I came into the world– to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”
