Who is more important, the one who sits at the table or the one who serves? The one who sits at the table, of course. But not here! For I am among you as one who serves.

孰為大、席坐者乎、役事者乎、非席坐者大乎、然我在爾中如役事者也、

孰為長、席坐者乎、役事者乎、非席坐者長乎、然我在爾中、如役事者也、

孰為大、席坐者乎、抑役事者乎、非席坐者乎、然我在爾曹中、如役事者也、

夫坐席者與侍奉者孰大？非坐席者乎？然予在爾中、則如侍奉者也。

For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.

The servants who are ready and waiting for his return will be rewarded. I tell you the truth, he himself will seat them, put on an apron, and serve them as they sit and eat!

Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form,he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

You know the generous grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty he could make you rich.

“ When a servant comes in from plowing or taking care of sheep, does his master say,‘ Come in and eat with me’?No, he says,‘ Prepare my meal, put on your apron, and serve me while I eat. Then you can eat later.’And does the master thank the servant for doing what he was told to do? Of course not.

and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter said to him,“ Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”Jesus replied,“ You don’t understand now what I am doing, but someday you will.”“ No,” Peter protested,“ you will never ever wash my feet!” Jesus replied,“ Unless I wash you, you won’t belong to me.”Simon Peter exclaimed,“ Then wash my hands and head as well, Lord, not just my feet!”Jesus replied,“ A person who has bathed all over does not need to wash, except for the feet, to be entirely clean. And you disciples are clean, but not all of you.”For Jesus knew who would betray him. That is what he meant when he said,“ Not all of you are clean.”After washing their feet, he put on his robe again and sat down and asked,“ Do you understand what I was doing?You call me‘ Teacher’ and‘ Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am.And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet.I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.I tell you the truth, slaves are not greater than their master. Nor is the messenger more important than the one who sends the message.
