你們究竟想看什麼？看先知嗎？是的，我告訴你們，他不只是先知。

他想殺掉約翰，但怕觸怒百姓，因為他們都認為約翰是先知。

他們試圖逮捕耶穌，但又害怕百姓，因為百姓都認為耶穌是先知。

許多人來到祂那裡。他們說：「雖然約翰沒有行過神蹟，可是約翰所說關於這人的事全是真的。」

聖殿護衛長和差役再去把使徒抓回來。這次他們不敢動粗，生怕百姓會用石頭打他們。

至於你，我的兒子啊！你將要被稱為至高者的先知，因為你要走在主的前面，為祂預備道路，

你們究竟想看什麼？看先知嗎？是的，我告訴你們，他不只是先知。聖經上說，『看啊，我要差遣我的使者在你前面為你預備道路。』這裡所指的就是約翰。我告訴你們，凡婦人所生的，沒有一個比約翰大，但上帝國中最微不足道的也比他大。」眾百姓和稅吏聽了這番話，都承認上帝是公義的，因為他們接受了約翰的洗禮。

但他們認為在節日期間不宜下手，因為可能會在百姓中引起騷亂。

他們聽出這比喻是針對他們說的，就想逮捕耶穌，但又害怕百姓，只好先離開了。
